Description
Hi there! I'm QT – and I’d love to welcome you to Ha Giang!

I am currently running a motorbike rental company, organizing guided motorbike tours, and managing three hostels in Ha Giang – one of the most beautiful and culturally rich regions in northern Vietnam.

We are always excited to host volunteers from around the world who are eager to experience local life while assisting us with our daily work. It’s a great opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Ha Giang, learn more about Vietnamese culture, and connect with locals in a meaningful way.

Our team consists of around 50 friendly and dedicated Vietnamese staff members, of which 25 - 27 are working full-time, about 20 of whom speak English at a conversational level.

Hello everyone, before reading this you must know that I thought for more than a month, after my stay in QT, about leaving this feedback. I must say also that it's the very first time I'm leaving a not 100% good feedback. The goal of a feedback is to be transparent right ? So it's my duty to do so.

What I'm about to say, and this sentence is… read more more adressed to QT, doesn't change in anyway that you QT, your staff and family are nice and, without anydoubt, generous people.

I simply feel that I must be honest and transparent about my experience at your place.

To start, I had choosen this project because I had a goal in mind. I wanted to get a new experience in social media and photography. So, as it was written on the profile that they were looking for people to do social media and photography, I was more than delighted to do so. I didn't ask much questions about the job before coming because the profile looked clear and completed. QT replied really fast to arrange my coming to Ha Giang and was really generous paying the night bus for me to go.

Once there, I realised that the work was not at all about social media and photography. I was doing the hostel checkin/chechout, serving the breakfast, storing the luggages, renting motorbikes, replying to overall questions of the customers.

So the 2nd day I talked to QT about it and he told me that he was not looking for people to work in social media and photography anymore because the help was more needed in hospitality and reception tasks. And I totally understand that sometimes the work can change depending on the season, the staff and many other variables.

But on the workaway profile it wasn't mentionned at all that the host was ONLY looking for people to do hospitality or reception tasks. Actually the profile was more focused on social media and photography.

And I think it is the responsability of the host to update his own profile according to the current help needed or it could be also just saying by message to the interested woofer that the job has changed.

In terms of communication, QT was always there if i needed something or to reply any questions i had. But in the other hand, I felt from QT, his family and the staff not so much interest in meeting new people or sharing their culture.
And I think the concept behing workaway is to build a sharing community. And here, I think we all agree on the fact that the word sharing is used by workaway in the large sens, meaning sharing culture, ideas, etc.

Despite all that, I had still a overall quite good experience. I met so many interesting travelers passing by the hostel.

I still want to say thank you again QT, I hope this message will benefit you in anyways in your life and projects. Wishing you all the best.

I find it really hard to describe my workaway experience with QT. I guess it’s more than amazing. I can still remember how excited the staff were when I arrived at their garage and told them I was the new volunteer. I’m sure they’ll welcome you with the widest smile and loudest cheer like how they welcomed me (I was indeed flattered).

So I… read more stayed with QT and his extended family for around 18 days. Winter time is quite a low season in Ha Giang, and QT already has an adequate number of people to run his guest house, so I was free most of the time. I guess my greatest contribution was disassembling the X’mas tree with Jorgen. I helped with checking-in, taking orders for breakfast and dinner, and chatting with the travelers. Sometimes I offered to help with housekeeping but the ladies always rejected.

Everyone here was so friendly and warmhearted. I personally enjoyed the meal time a lot, where all staff and family members sat together on the mat, chatting and cracking jokes at all times. Apart from Ken who was usually at the reception desk, I guess I mostly spent time with the cleaning ladies. Chi (means sister), Voc and Thiem always took care of me. Whenever I went to the kitchen and offered to help, they fed me with some food instead. Haha maybe they knew I’d make a mess. Although I don’t understand Vietnamese, I liked to stay with them and watch them joking with Mike, QT’s nephew. It’s so much fun.

Of course I must thank QT and Jorgen for hosting me. QT would ask if I was good whenever he saw me, but I guess my condition was always better than his :D And you can tell that he always treats his customers wholeheartedly, insisting to provide the best service. But bear in mind, QT can be very different when he’s drunk. Haha and they have rice wine almost every two days, so be ready for that. I’m sure you’ll have fun. QT’s wife, Hiep, doesn’t speak very good English, but she’s very sweet. She always asked me to eat more and finish the food. She even bought me a large bag of snacks on the day I left (like everyone just wanted to feed me) and paid for my bus ticket without me knowing. I’m still feeling bad for that since I didn’t do much for them.

Lastly, Jorgen, if you’re reading this, I sincerely thank you for everything you did. Like sorting out their family relationship for me when everyone else just tried to confuse me, like having morning or evening talks with me which sometimes lasted for an hour but they’re often inspiring, like giving me info about Ha Giang and explaining Vietnamese culture to me so patiently when I asked some stupid questions, like being there as an ignorant foreigner with me when everyone else just started talking in Vietnamese, like encouraging or nearly forcing me to take a bike and go on the loop on my own when I doubted myself, and etc. And no matter how many times you talked about the story of you meeting QT, I still enjoyed it as the first time I heard of it. Tell QT I’ll try to train myself to be a better drinker so I can have two more shots before I get drunk in order to invite both of you for a drink when I return :D Thanks again and see you!!!
