    Description

I would like to invite you to come and join us in Portugal to plant a lot of trees. Our place is 18 hectares consisting mostly of hillside with nice views and forested floodland next to the river Seixe. When we started there was completely nothing; no road, water, electricity and internet. In the meantime we have built these amenities, but unfortunately this summer we were hit by a bushfire.

On August the 7th the Seixe river valley has been hit by a devastating wildfire consuming 8.400 hectares of amazing, biodiverse forest. Our 18 hectare land was part of the affected area. The Seixe River Valley was representing 3% of all the biodiversity of Portugal and although much of it will recover, a lot is severely damaged and might not recover to it’s former splendour for several centuries when not supported by us, humans.
This is why we are committed to plant 30.000 trees this spring.

From October we have seeded the trees in more than 1100 growtrays. . Local schools and volunteers have helped us collecting the acorns and seeding them into grow trays. Now we have a long row of trays with sprouting oak trees. In a couple of months the first 1000s will be ready to plant!

Between March and May we will plant them out. We will be with many people, so it's going to be a nice gathering of like-minded souls from all over the world. It will be a planting camp and accomodation will be in big army tents (2x 5x10 meter) with a campkitchen and bathrooms closeby. Food will be cooked for lunch, dinner and breakfast you're welcome to grab when you want (or organize with the others). I'm afraid we'll have to ask to share the costs of the food given that at the moment we don't have the funds left after the fire to supply this. The amount will be according to the cost of the food, but not more than 5 euro per day. We'll be planting 3 hours per day, from 9 to 12 in the morning. After this we'll have lunch and then the day is yours to chill out, walk the land, go to the beach or whatever suits your needs at that moment ;).

We are located in rural Portugal close to small coastal Town Odeceixe. Many people farm the traditional way and there are many traditional crafts and products to experience. There is the Rota vincentina walking route and several markets which you can go to. Also there is a large international community present of which many are living a more self sustainable life all in their own way. You can learn how to seed and plant many trees, and maybe some DIY stuff. We will work 3 hours a day, 5 days a week and in the weekend we will be free.

    Accommodation

You can come with your own van or tent, or sleep in one of our big army tents. It will be a basic camp, hot showers, compost toilets, kitchen and sleeping space will be supplied. We would like to ask everyone to take their own sleeping gear (sleeping mattrass/mat and sleeping bag) and cutlery and crockery. We will have some available, but given the fact we could accomodate up to 50 people you can imagine this gets hard to store ;).
