    English Centre:
You will be preparing and teaching English classes in local public schools, the Centre itself and sometimes even orphanages all for the same need of learning English to increase their future prospects in Vietnam. The kids ages range from 4-15 and they are all lovely and eager to learn.
1 class is 1h30 and you have to work 3-5 hours every day including preparing and teaching. These hours depends if you have a class that day. For example if you don't have class today, you still have to prepare lesson plan ahead of time unless its your off day. You will have 2 days off every week.

You will be helping out in the newly opened Hostel, which is developing all the time. You will be sweeping and moping the rooms, cleaning the beds. For example we had a volunteer painting the living room walls. There are almost no rules for the Hostel besides the general maintenance therefore any creativity is welcome. Tours are being designed for the guests and sometimes you have to go with the guests as a tour guide.

The centre and the Hostel is in the same building and due to lack of work in the Hostel you will be helping out in both the English Centre and Hostel combined to achieve the daily goal.

Cleaning common areas, making trips to the market and cooking doesn't count for "work". It is considered a common chore for anybody in the house and can be distributed amongst ourselves. Team work makes the dream work!

The second option is to stay with my parents, and help with their small farm. My parents live in the village and they have a small farm which requires a lot of help. They have pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, dogs and cats a garden. No experience required to help them, but the work is a bit physical and you have to wake up early every day or you will miss breakfast. Its required you help out 3-5 hours a day depending on the weather. You will have 2 days off every week. The farm doesn't have wifi, but there is a cafe some kilometres from there.

Whether you stay in the village and help my parents or stay in the city with me we appreciate your valuable help and we will provide you with accommodation and 3 meals a day and on off days you will be taken to villages, hidden waterfalls, rowing boats in lakes and "The Real Vietnam". Basically everything an ordinary traveller wouldn't find and its untouched by tourism. It can't become more local than this.

We prefer volunteers that can stay for at least 2 weeks and priority will be given to long term volunteers, but everybody is welcome!

  • Accommodation

You will be staying in one of the Hostel rooms and you might have to share it with other volunteers. The room got bed bunks, wi-fi and aircondition. There are 2 shared bathrooms, a sitting room, an office and a kitchen - besides the classroom and hostel rooms. We got a washing machine and on the highest floor a place to hang your clothes to dry or sit down and enjoy the view with some coffee or a book.

The accommodation is simple but it has everything you need for a comfortable living.

When volunteering at my parents garden, you will be accommodated in a home stay (it is a living room with two beds, you might share the room with other people). Moreover, there is a bathroom and a kitchen. You will experience the traditional vietnamese village life.

    What else ...

Yen Bai is in the mountain province, with rugged mountainous scenery and green rice paddy fields in the valleys. The Hoang Lien Son mountain range runs through the province. The Red (or Thao) River and Chay River also flow the province. Their origin is in the Yunnan, China.

This valley created by these two river systems in the Yen Bai Province is fertile, though an uneven territory; Muong Lo plain is the rice bowl of the province. In the plateau between the Red River and Da River there are many mountains. Besides the two main rivers, the Red and the Da, the province has about 200 canals, small streams and large lakes and swamps.

Thac Ba is an artificial lake of Yen Bai Province. The caves and grottos in hill-islands on the lake such as Hum (Tiger) Cave, Cau Cuoi Cave and Thac Ba Temple are attractive to visitors. Going there, you are able to take a relaxing swim in the lake, climb the mountains and explore the beautiful forests.

If you want to ride the bus to any place in Vietnam the bus station is nearby - less than 1 km
If you wanna ship your newly acquired exotic animal the train station will be at your service - less than 1 km away too.
The famous Red River is less than 2 km away.
We have a bone-cracking blind massage in Yen Bai as well performed by no less than blind professionals - less than 2 km away.
Around 500m from here we have a beautiful park and a lake which is included.
You can go to karaoke which is Vietnams answer for going to the club.
About 20 km from here you can see what I call "The Real Vietnam" There is a small village and there you can climb some rocks in the creek or go swimming in the waterfall between mountains.
If your poison is temples then its your lucky day too.
We use motorbikes to go here and there and if one is available you can borrow one, but you have to pay for your own fuel and potential damages.

Remember, being bored is a lack of imagination.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Volunteering here will give you first of all teaching experience, which some of our volunteers need for a teaching job in Vietnam or in their home countries. Teaching experience is not required to volunteer with us, but a plus. That is why we prefer long term volunteers so we don't waste any resources when providing you all the necessary training - example for a 1 week stay.

You will live in the Northern part of Vietnam and will experience the pace of life and day to day life is different compared to the rest of Vietnam.

We will cook and eat Northern vietnamese cuisine and will expand your knowledge regarding food - Im also interested in your home country food and would love to learn something.

I can teach you how to speak vietnamese.

Otherwise is your cultural exchange with us only limited to your own engagement and observations in the day to day life.

Upon completing atleast 1 month of volunteering, you will be provided with a diploma and a recommendation letter.
We can offer our help to volunteers to finding jobs around Vietnam as well.

The 5 dollars fee you see is ONLY for short term volunteers who just needs a short break from travelling, but still has to earn their keep.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Hope to see you soon!

Why does workaway.info allow listings of hosts who charge money?

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay.  (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
