We are a Japanese / Dutch-Canadian couple. We love to travel, explore and stay active (we surf, snowboard, hike, cycle...). We spend winters in the mountains and summers by the sea. We are able to live our dream by sharing our life-style and space with like-minded budget travelers, and volunteers like you! In summers we run 2 small guest-houses , a rental cottage, and a reception area / cafe / outdoor chill space walking distance from the beach.

We prefer long-term help, people who can commit to 1 month or more during July, August. Volunteer duties and working hours depend on the time you would be joining us.
We do not provide meals instead volunteers receive a 500 yen a day food budget so volunteers can choose their own food and use their own kitchen for cooking. The food budget is not provided on a daily basis instead it is refunded at the end of every month, or the end of your stay.
During the low season (APRIL, MAY, JUNE, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER):
We will need some help with housekeeping and room-making but we will also had extra time and space available for people with special skills and can commit to more specialized project (gardening, landscaping, renovation, painting, plastering, building, web design, photos for website, photo-shop for editing, etc.), we are able to provide accommodation for volunteers wishing to stay 1 week or more.
Looking for people to help out with painting, gardening, general maintenance, silk-screening (bags & shirts), blogging, photography, social networking, cafe work, menu development, website updates and maintenance (CSS & wordpress site).
During the high season (JULY, AUGUST) :
We hope to have people who can commit to at least 1 month and help out with all kinds of work at the guesthouses, rental cottage and reception area. Our main focus will be on taking care of guests and keeping everything clean and organized. Although we are a casual accommodation we aim to maintain a high standard of cleanliness so we will need people who can work independently and pay attention to small details. We are also looking for people with cooking and kitchen experience.
. Please keep in mind Japan gets very hot in summer making the work more challenging.

Walk or ride a bike to the beach, go swimming, surfing, snorkeling, hike beautiful hiking trails along the coast. Go to festivals and other events... Convenience stores, restaurants, cafes, are all within walking distance. We have rental gear the staff/volunteers are welcome to use for free: bicycles, body boards, snorkels..... and more!
We are looking for people who are mature and independent. We are busy and don't have a lot of time to spend with volunteers but volunteers will have a lot of time to spend with each other and exploring the area (we promise not to make anyone work for more than an average of 25 hours a week). We try to go out once a week, and take our volunteers for meals out, excursions, or our favorite sightseeing spots. We always have a more then a few fun and adventurous people around to share your time with.

We live near the sea! Enjoy fishing, surfing, hiking along the rugged coast line or spend your days chilling on the beach. Although Shimoda is a beach town and we get plenty of tourists, the town, especially the Kisami area has a real local vibe. Everyone here grows their own veggies and has their own rice paddy. Small unattended veggie stands along the road lets you have your share for cheap and sometimes free! I've seen ¥0 leeks for "sale"! Locals are friendly and are likely to greet everyone with a "konichiwa".
