My experience differed significantly from what was described in the profile. The listing mentioned helping with the host’s daughters, but during my entire stay they were never present, so that aspect of the exchange never took place.

When I arrived, the house was in a very poor state of cleanliness, with accumulated dirt, cobwebs, and insects. … read more During my first days, I spent considerable time deep-cleaning the house, including the kitchen, floors, windows, bedrooms, and other areas.

The main issue for me was the workload. Beyond cleaning, I was expected to handle grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning after meals, garden maintenance, watering plants late in the afternoon, preparing dinner, and other household tasks. In practice, the expectations went well beyond the approximately 5 hours per day described in the Workaway arrangement and often felt like an expectation of being available throughout the day.

Another uncomfortable situation occurred when I was asked to leave the accommodation for a couple of nights so the host could have a private encounter. After I returned, I was later informed with very short notice that I would need to leave because my pace of work did not meet expectations.

What I found particularly concerning was the explanation given for why I was not considered a suitable match. I was told that when the host’s daughters were present, I would be expected not only to keep the house clean but also to prepare their meals, clean up after them, assist with their activities, maintain the household, and continue carrying out the other daily tasks already expected of me. Although the daughters were never present during my stay, it became clear that the role envisioned by the host extended far beyond the exchange described in the profile and would have effectively required full-day availability dedicated to childcare, cooking, cleaning, and household management.

For this reason, I believe the issue was not the quality of my work but rather a significant difference between the workload I had agreed to and the workload that was ultimately expected.

Overall, I felt there was a substantial gap between the profile description and the reality of the exchange, particularly regarding the nature of the work and the workload. Future volunteers may wish to clarify expectations in detail before committing to this host.
