    Description

Greetings and thank you for your interest in volunteering at our hostel.

We are located in Unawatuna, in the south coast of Sri Lanka, within close proximity to the historic city of Galle and the world renowned Unawatuna beach.

We established this hostel in September 2017 and ever since we have had many travellers from around the globe visiting us. Our journey has been enriched with all the experiences that we shared with each and every traveller that has stayed with us over the years.

Our vision is "To Create an Unforgettable Experience of a Lifetime for Each of Our Guests". To achieve this vision, our team always goes out of the way to treat every guest as part of a family, organise activities to bring everyone together in a light-hearted and fun filled atmosphere, as well as maintain utmost professionalism in carrying out their duties. We expect all our volunteers to live up to these values.

Our regular staff includes a property manager, as well as kitchen and housekeeping staff. All housekeeping and kitchen duties will be taken care of by the regular staff. Tasks expected from the volunteers are some reception shifts, managing social media, socialising with guests as well as organising events.

We aim to have 3-5 volunteers at a time, and each volunteer will be expected to contribute a maximum of 20 hours of work per week. Every day we prepare breakfast and dinner which will be available to all volunteers at a 50% discount. Volunteers will be provided free shared accommodation in a dorm room.

When you message us please copy and paste the subject "Hi, I am looking forward to becoming a part of your hostel family" . Messages without the subject mentioned may not receive a response. This is done to ensure that you have taken the time to read our description as that shows us how keen you are to truly be a part of this project.

If you end up volunteering with us, our promise to you is that it would be an experience you would never forget ;)

Looking forward to hearing from you

    Rajiv

Volunteers will get training and hands on experience in organising events and in carrying out front desk operations in a backpacker hostel which will be invaluable for those who wish to volunteer in similar places in future as well as for travellers who have ambitions in starting a career in the hospitality industry

In addition, they will continuously meet and interact with backpackers from all over the world, and have the opportunity to share stories, explore activities in the surrounding area, and make friendships that last.

The hostel itself is located in a quiet, tranquil neighbourhood surrounded by nature which enriches the living experience. The town of Unawatuna is home to many scenic beaches, tourist hotspots, temples and other attractions. Galle, which is 10km away from the hostel is a bustling city and contains within it a picturesque dutch fort from the colonial era which is classified now as a UNESCO heritage site.

In addition, volunteers can plan trips and explore the island during their off days as most places within Sri Lanka can be reached within a few hours. While each volunteer will have a roster, they will have some off days. In addition, they can always exchange shifts with other volunteers if they need to get away for a few extra days exploring the island.

Surfing, diving, whale watching, beach parties and a lot more awaits you to make your experience worthwhile

    Help

The type of help expected from volunteers can be broadly fitted into following categories

    - Organising events

We strive to organise around 3 events per week. Examples of the types of events would be quiz nights, karaoke nights, drinking games, BBQ nights, board game nights, pub crawls etc. Each event will have a volunteer in charge of organising it and carrying it through, while some events would be organised by more than one volunteer. The duration of the event will be counted towards weekly work hours for volunteers (which will not exceed 20 hours per week, per volunteer).

    - Reception shifts

Reception shifts will involve typical front desk duties such as checking in guests, entering purchases onto the property management system, collecting payments and checking out guests . Reception shifts will count towards the weekly work hours for volunteers (which will not exceed 20 hours per week, per volunteer). A short training on how to use the property management system and how to carry out a shift will be provided before you start.

    Other:
In addition to the types of work listed above we would really appreciate if you could take interesting photos during your stay and forward some of them to the hostel mobile or email so that we can use it as promotional content in our social media. On certain instances selected volunteers may be given the responsibility of managing our presence on social media platforms.
