Description
Hello! I'm Charlie and I have been described by one host as a "Workaway veteran". I don't know if that's good or makes me sound old but its probably a fair description! I'm planing a trip from the end of November to start of January and looking at Tanzania.
I've been using this site since 2016 on trips in South America, Europe and Asia on all manner of projects - permaculture farms, eco builds, hostels, charities, bee keeping, you name it! My account says Charlie_Holly but I'm just one person. Holly and I went our separate ways :)
A little about me.
I'm 32 years old and have been living Wales for the last 7 years (a country within the UK with stunning beauty and unique culture/language). I'm interested in a whole bunch of things, but here's a few of the main ones.
- Music! I play instruments, regularly DJ and put on club nights (Funk, Disco and Electronica from around the world)
- Cooking! I love plant based food and love going all out and putting on big spreads.
- Politics! Regularly involved in progressive activism and I work for the UKs largest trade union as an organiser - showing working people how to take the power back. If you're into Right wing conspiracy theories, I'm not your guy!
- Dancing! Show me a dancefloor at a festival or a club night and I'll be throwing shapes until the lights come on (although the music needs to be half decent).
- Nature! Cities are great, but nothing bits truly being in nature - hiking for days on end, wild camping on a cliff top, sitting silently and waiting for wildlife to appear.
- Adventures! I'm up for anything that's weird, wonderful and gets your heart going - surfing and scuba diving to name some of my favourite activities.
- Travel! Last but not least, travel in all its many forms - my last solo holiday involved 2 weeks cycling across Southern Spain during a flood.
What can skills can I bring along?
Practical skills
- Natural building/construction: I've worked with stone, wood, cob to help with a variety of structures. I'm enthusiastic in this area and happy to help where I can.
- Gardening/Permaculture/Vegetable growing: Have a basic understanding of permaculture principles but would like to learn more. I used to have an allotment (council rented land for veg growing) for a number of years where I grew a whole manner of things but its been a while - but always happy to muck in!
- DIY: As well as the Workaways, I've had fix up a couple of houses. This has involved building a fairly broad understanding of all sorts of skills be it carpentry, general maintenance, brick laying etc - again, won't pretend I'm an expert
- Decorating: I've done lots of decorating on many Workaways and once worked (very briefly) as decorator. Again, I'm not a pro but can get by.
- Cooking: As I say, this is a great obsessions of mine!
The less practical (but still very useful!)
- Hospitality: I've spent many years working in hospitality, although not so much recently. I volunteered in a number of hostels and I'm more than happy to get the party started if that's the vibe or keep things chill.
- Language: I am a native English speakers and happy to help anyone improve their English skills. My Spanish used to be better but it's okay, I can get by...
- Social media: I used to work in communications so happy to help with websites, copy writing, videography etc etc.
