  • Description

    Hi!

I am Liam, a 21-year-old who is currently living in London on a year out from university and is very excited to spend some time at a 'Workaway' destination in a part of Spain.

With this Workaway experience, I would love to be surrounded by likeminded people who also love nature, the outdoors and a sense of community!

I moved to Madrid at the age of 13 as my Dad was offered a job opportunity there. At 18 I moved back to the UK to start my undergraduate degree at Durham University, although my family still (somewhat) live in Madrid. I'm very lucky to have experienced living in two countries and to be familiar with multiple cultures and languages! Also, I have made some great friends in Madrid.

However, my experience going to school in Madrid (for both my brother and I) was a bit uncomfortable at times due to the school we attended. Some of the students there (including some of the friends we made) didn't have exactly the same interests as us.

Therefore, I want to further explore living in Spain in a way that is slightly different to my experience in Madrid. To make friends and experience living with likeminded people!

I am someone who loves being in nature and sharing its abundance with others. Since going to university, I have developed an interest in permaculture, and since October 2023 have been a volunteer for a permaculture garden near to where I live in London. My knowledge of permaculture is not very strong, despite my interest in it and other, similar farming practices, so I'd love to develop this interest through a Workaway experience.

I also really enjoy exercise and sport. I practice Yoga, Calisthenics and 'functional movement' exercises (also known as 'animal flow' by some). I want to start practicing martial arts too. To strengthen myself and prevent injury I often walk, run and climb barefoot or with minimalist footwear (it also feels amazing!). I also began routinely practicing 'breathwork' over the last year.

I want to pursue a career based around this field of physical movement/therapy. I have a reasonable amount of knowledge about this, which I'm both happy to share and keen to develop.

I used to play a lot of team sport, especially football, when I was younger and would like to again this year. I've also always enjoyed the thrill of extreme sports and am really keen to spend time surfing this year.

I would like to spend more time being creative; dancing, writing, playing music, drawing etc...

I have experience working with young people through previous tutoring roles and an internship I carried out in the summer of 2022 at Washington Mind charity - a mental health charity in Sunderland, UK.

My native (and most fluent) language is English. My Spanish is almost fluent. One of the reasons I want to do a Workaway in Spain is to become completely fluent! I have previous experience tutoring Spanish children to help with English proficiency. I speak an ‘intermediate’ level of French (my understanding is much better than my speaking), having French relatives and having experienced living in France for 6 months during the spring/summer of 2020.

    Work experience

    • Summer internship - I carried out a summer internship scheme at Washington Mind charity in 2022. My role was mainly focused around working on the Young People's Project - a progressive initiative that works to co-create opportunities for local young people to express the concept of 'mental health' (and their own) in less clinical, top-down ways.

    • Assistant gardener - Pruning and cutting down of trees, creating and tending to flower beds, clearing irrigation system, mowing and watering the lawn, swimming pool maintenance. I worked this paid, part-time job for 4 months from April 2020 until August 2020.

    Other relevant experience:

    • I am a volunteer for the permaculture garden at The Castle - a climbing centre in North London. I love volunteering there, it is alongside likeminded people who I can learn a lot from. I love nature, and permaculture farming is a fun and creative way for people to gain a greater connection to the edible plants that help us all live! Climbing at the centre is also really fun!

    • Experience caring for an elderly person - During the quarantine of the initial COVID-19 outbreak of March 2020 I moved to France to help care for my Grandmother who had Alzheimer's, who needed constant 24-hr care. I lived, worked (was able to find work as a part-time gardener) and attended online school in France from March 2020 to August 2020, leaving in August when my Grandmother’s usual carers were not restricted by the pandemic.
