Hello fellow humans! Do you love something other than money? So do I! Let's hang out and reciprocate! I am a 33 year-old New Zealander. I can offer vegan cooking skills, a bit of DIY knowledge (fencing, woodwork, wall plastering, chainsaw use and maintenance), music (guitar, drums, piano), art skills, gardening knowledge and my full presence and attention. All I ask is that you treat me as a human being and not free labour. It's a two way street! I have been wwoofing and volunteering all over the world for years and am particularly drawn to community projects where the pressures of life are evenly spread and the spirit of mutual-aid reigns. I am also a language nerd, speaking English and French fluently with an intermediate level of Italien.

A note on spiritual practices: while I am always open to new ideas and am respectful of the practices of others, please do not expect me to conform to your New Age/spiritual practices straight away. There are as many practices as there are people in this world, and expecting me to conform immediately to your spiritual ideas just because you think it's the 'true path', is both frustrating and unfair. This is written from personal experience.

Salut les êtres humains ! Est-ce qu'il y a quelque chose qui vous plaît à part l'argent ? Si oui, à moi aussi ! Rapprochons et entraidons-nous ! Je suis un Néozélandais de 33 ans. Je peux vous offrir des compétences en cuisine, en bricolage (faire des clôtures, construire des murs en terre-paille, travailler avec de la chaux, utiliser et entretenir une tronçonneuse etc), en musique (de la guitare, la flûte, batterie et du clavier), en art, et jardinage, ainsi que ma présence, empathie et attention totale. Tout ce que je vous demande c'est de nous traiter comme un être humain et non pas de la main d'œuvre gratuite. L'échange se fait dans les deux sens ! Je fais du bénévolat depuis longtemps à travers le monde, étant attiré particulièrement par les projets communautaires où les pressions de la vie se partagent de manière équitable et juste et où l'esprit de l'entraide régit. Je suis passionné des langues, et parle le français et l'anglais, avec un niveau moyen d'Italien en plus et j'adore apprendre les langues natives des pays que je visite.

À noter par rapport aux pratiques spirituelles : bien que je sois toujours ouvert aux idées et pratiques des autres, ne vous attendez pas à ce que je me conforme tout de suite à vos pratiques spirituelles/New Age. Il y a autant de pratiques que de personnes dans ce monde et c'est à la fois frustrant et injuste quand les gens s'attendent à ce que je me conforme aux idées spirituelles. Je parle d'expérience.

Music: I have played various instruments for 23 years and can teach Western music theory, Guitar, piano and Drums. Always looking for a Jam and am especially interested in Middle Eastern, Indian and West African music.

Art: I paint and draw as a hobby, following the strange artistic path, never knowing where is will lead, although hopefully there will be mushrooms as they are fun to draw.

J'aime peindre et dessiner, poursuivant le chemin artistique parfois étrange, ne sachant jamais où il l'aménera, bien qu'il espère y trouver des champignons parce qu'ils sont amusants à dessiner.

Cooking: I have a passion for Vegan cooking and looking for plant based alternatives to share and to learn.

DIY: Over the years I've picked up various DIY skills such as building fences, building dry stone walls with limestone, working with and maintaining chainsaws, as well as using various tools such as drills, skillsaws etc.

Bricolage : Au fils des années j'ai acquis plusieurs compétences en bricolage dont faire des clôtures, travailler avec la chaux, utiliser et entretenir une tronçonneuse, ainsi que utiliser d'autres outils électriques et manuels.

Gardening: I have experience in market gardening and small scale permaculture in New Zealand and France, and am always ready to push a wheelbarrow, pick up horse poo and dig a bed.

J'ai de l'expérience en maraîchage, en Nouvelle-Zélande et en France, et sommes toujours prêts à pousser une brouette, recueillir du fumier ou faire une nouvelle butte dans le jardin.

We spent 3 weeks with Hassan, who welcomed us with open arms at the last minute when we spontaneously decided to go to the Taragalte festival. It was a magical experience! Hassan is the kind of host you won’t find very often: generous, caring and funny! He wrapped us in kindness and covered us with attentions, for example when we got sick and he … read more ordered us to rest, without any pressure to make up for the hours we didn’t work. He took us to the local souk, making us benefit from his undeniable expertise and social influence in the village. He also organized a hammam session for me and another workaywayer, as well as a trip in the desert for a very reasonable price. An experience which will be etched into my memory forever. Just like those delicious tajines that we got to eat everyday. I loved sitting together on the floor around that small table to eat from the same pot, as the Moroccan tradition commands.
As for the work, I wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re hyperactive and hoping to have definite, fixed working hours. However if you want to experience another approach to work and Life in general, more laid-back and definitely revolving around wellness and a certain art of (slow) living, then you’ve come to the right place!
I enjoyed a lot working with Youssef (Hassan’s neighbour) and his friends, a very welcoming and joyful team of young men! As they didn’t speak much French or English, I got to learn some darija and Berber, which I thought was really cool. Most of the work consisted in working with them on a building project (making natural bricks and plastering walls with an earth/straw mix) or in the garden at Youssef’s place. There were also two guys working on a natural earth wall nearby, who we helped a few times. But they honestly seemed to be managing just fine without us so we mostly helped them carrying buckets of earth while Watching them do most of the work. On top of that, Chris did some art in Hassan’s kasbah, another possible activity that you can do. Although workawayer have redecorated the living-room so much that there isn’t much space left. 🙂 However, Forget about the farm date! Nothing’s happening there at the moment.
Small downside for vegetarians and non-Frenchspeakers: although Hassan is flexible and will do everything he can to accomodate your needs, he speaks little English, whereas his French is excellent. That means that if there is a majority of Frenchspeaking volunteers, you might feel a bit left out, despite his best efforts. Similar problem for vegetarians: the collective meals are mostly with meat or fish, so if you’re strictly vegetarian or vegan. You can always buy and eat your own food, but you would be missing on the delicious food and the collective experience. For your information, Hassan asks for 5 euros par day for the food and expenses, which I think is really reasonable considering the workload that will be expected of you.
Well, this review is already too long so I will stop here. Thanks again Hassan for your warm welcome and ruthless teaching in the art of making Moroccan tea. 😉 I will miss you and my sweet Vera! Love & peace upon your journey, I’ll see you again someday, inchallah. ❤

Nous avons passé un peu plus de 3 semaines avec Hassan, qui nous a accueillis à bras ouverts à la dernière minute, lorsque nous avons décidé d’aller au festival de Taragalte. Ce fut une expérience magique ! Hassan est un hôte comme vous en trouverez peu : généreux, attentionné et drôle ! Il nous a enveloppés d’attentions et de bienveillance, notamment lorsque nous étions malades et qu’il nous a ordonné de nous reposer, sans pression pour rattraper nos heures… Il nous a fait découvrir le souk de Tagounite en nous faisant profiter de son indéniable expertise et de son rayonnement social dans le village, m’a arrangé une après-midi hammam avec une autre workawayeuse, arrangé une excursion dans le désert pour un prix très raisonnable, expérience qui restera gravée dans ma mémoire à jamais. De même que tous ces tajines délicieux que nous avons pu déguster tous les jours ! J’ai aimé ces repas assis toustes ensemble autour de la table basse, à piocher dans le même plat comme le veut la coutume marocaine.
En ce qui concerne le travail, je ne recommanderais pas cet endroit si vous êtes hyperactif et avez besoin d’horaires précis, définis, et de vous démener comme des forcenés. En revanche, si vous venez chercher un autre rapport au travail, détendu et résolument secondaire par rapport au soin qui se doit d’être accordé aux personnes et à l’art de vivre, vous avez frappé à la bonne porte ! J’ai adoré bosser sur le chantier de Youssef, son voisin et ami ! Toute cette équipe de jeunes est joyeuse, accueillante, et puisqu’ils parlent assez peu français, c’était particulièrement chouette d’apprendre quelques mots de darija et berbères avec les gars. Moi (Manon) j’ai particulièrement bossé avec eux pour fabriquer des briques en terre, faire les enduits en terre-paille de la maison en construction ainsi qu’un peu de jardinage. Il y avait aussi deux voisins qui montaient un mur en terre et que nous avons aidés à quelques occasions, mais ils se débrouillaient si bien sans nous qu’on n’avait pas vraiment l’impression de les aider à grand-chose ! Mais c’était intéressant de voir comment ils travaillaient tout en leur filant un coup de pattes. En plus de toutes ces activités, Chris a aussi fait de l’art dans la kasbah d’Hassan, qui a été magnifiquement redécorée par de nombreux.ses bénévoles. Par contre oubliez la ferme de dattes jusqu’à nouvel ordre, c’est en pause pour le moment !
Petit bémol pour les végétariens et non francophones : même si Hassan est adaptable et s’arrangera toujours pour que notre séjour se passe le mieux possible, il parle assez peu l’anglais, contrairement au français qu’il parle impeccablement. Donc s’il y a une majorité de francophones, sachez que vous vous sentirez peut-être un peu isolé en dépit de ses efforts pour vous intégrer.
Quant aux végétariens, disons simplement que les tajines ne le sont souvent pas, et donc si vous souhaitez manger strictement végétarien, il vous faudra faire votre bouffe de votre côté. Ce qui entre nous serait dommage vu la qualité des repas et l’ambiance qui règne pendant ces moments !! Mais c’est à savoir si c’est quelque chose d’important pour vous… pour info, Hassan demande 5 euros par jour en participation à la nourriture et aux frais, ce qui me semble très raisonnable au vu de la quantité de travail demandée (qui je le rappelle n’est pas l’essentiel de l’expérience si vous allez là-bas).
Voilà cet avis est déjà très long donc je vais m’arrêter là !! Merci encore Hassan pour ton accueil chaleureux et ton apprentissage implacable de l’art du thé marocain. 😉
