Hello :)

My name is Thomas from the Netherlands. I'll be traveling in Portugal for the coming time and looking for interesting projects to work on.

In the last five years I've accustomed myself to a nomadic lifestyle and worked on several nices projects mostly in Portugal in land cultivation, agroforestry, (eco) tourism, horses, gardening and goat farms. Now I am up for anything, but in particular interested in permaculture, off grid living, construction and creative projects. Permaculture really caught my interest and I would be happy to learn and grow more. I'm also keen to gain more skills in DIY building, carpentry, construction and working with machines (ideally by helping out on a project from someone who has some skills in this). Also any opportunity with horses involved I would gladly take. I have experience in horse care, but would like to learn more about horses and eventually ride. I am also open for longer term volunteering in the right place and time.

About me: I am a great lover of nature, animals and the outdoors and want to spend most of my time outside and live with the flows of nature. I try to live in a low impact manner, sustainable and ecological conscious. I travel slow and basic with my backpack. I like to walk long distance trails and have done quite a few in Europe and New Zealand. I'm interested in nature and the human psyche, languages, philosophy, food and cuisine. I hold a bsc. in Consumer Behaviour and Marketing.

I see myself as an enthousiastic, calm, reliable and open minded person, and always willing to learn new things. For me, working in a relaxed manner with a motivated attitude and having fun is important.

I am no professional in anything (!) but...I gained several skills during my previous Workaway experiences:

- Working with forestry and gardening equipment and tools (such as chainsaw, sawmill, axe, drill, shredder, strimmer).

- Basic knowledge of permaculture, planting and gardening (soil cultivation and growing plants, pruning and weeding, olive harvesting, compost techniques)

- (Very) basic construction (building a dog kennel, installing fences, sanding and painting, some simple work with wood, making cement and bricklaying & making stone terrace walls)

- Tourism (serving guests, preparing food and cooking, cleaning, allround camping work)

- Animal care (goatherding, feeding and milking, experience with dogs & caring for horses)

- Teaching (for many years I have been privately tutoring primary and high school students in many courses, including English).

It was a great exchange and a good start of the year, being on Nina’s farm with the girls and all the animals. Sheep, horses, donkeys, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, wild animals…The list goes on! It was a pleasure to have Thomas here at my place. He helped me building a fence for the horses, sawing wood with the chainsaw and did maintenance work on the land. Thomas helped us three weeks in the forest, building trails and pulling logs and working in the sawmill. A friendly and strong man. It was a pleasure to work and to be with him. He was amazingly open for the spiritual side of the mountain and the meditations for intensive personal growth.

A thousand stars for Olaf and Myrthe (and Pachau) and their project. When you come here, you basically live in a small nature reserve.
