Description
I would describe myself as a wanderer, someone who wishes for nothing more than the freedom to explore. I see myself as a small part of a very big universe. I am privileged to be able to travel and I recognize that, and am grateful for what I am bestowed with. In a world that seems to very randomly assign privilege, and rarely in a fair or just fashion, it is up to each human being to sense their position of privilege and make the most of it. I want to learn what I can from my travels, to learn the lessons that different cultures have passed down through time. I believe that all of us share common values and by immersing one's self in a different culture, one will learn that humans are not all that different from each other. Everyone brings something of value to the table, and by sharing our experiences with one another we are given the opportunity to learn and to grow. Workaway gives me the perfect opportunity to learn from humanity. Each experience gives me the chance to meet someone new, and allows me to take something away from their culture or lifestyle that adds new meaning to my life. It is not only interaction with new lifestyles and cultures that sparks new growth in us, but also encountering the natural beauty of each country. Nothing humbles me as much as the sight of natural beauty, in an undisturbed state. Too often in cities we forget our place, and I believe that it is only when we leave the human world that we find ourselves truly.
I have received so much over the course of my travels that I see now that there is no way to pay any of it back, I can only pay it forward by giving freely what I have received, a reason to believe in innate human goodness.

I am quick to learn new tasks and am willing to work hard to earn my keep. I can work well with tourists and help manage small teams. From recent workaway experiences, I can also say confidently that I can work with my hands to do physical labor and can learn to perform tasks with minimal supervision. I am also good with animals, both husbandry and pets. I am computer literate, and will be able to assist with basic computer tasks such as using microsoft word, excel, powerpoint for organizational or data management purposes. I have a basic level of experience with power tools.

I hope to one day create something that will benefit more than just me, and to use my position of privilege to give back what I can, through education and empowerment, to those who lack the tools to better themselves . In the meantime, I value opportunities, and conversations that will help me learn and understand how to properly do so.

I partially manage a small farm in India, and am also keen to learn more about sustainable practices and permaculture. The goal of my style of farming is not necessarily how to maximize the production of a particular crop or in monocultures but rather to maximize the diversity in a small space and to learn how to develop each type of natural resource to it's maximum potential while working in close equilibrium with the land.

My understanding of these areas, social and ecological, is still in its infancy and so whether you are a fellow workawayer or a host I would value your counsel and input in these areas that are born of your experiences in life.

I spent the summer of 2021 driving across Canada and living in my car, retracing much of the road I cycle toured on before stopping for winter in the Yukon.

I started a solo cycle tour in Canada in 2019, exploring BC, the Yukon and the NWT.

I spent an unforgettable month in Iceland amidst scenes of great natural beauty. Each natural wonder held something unique and one could never tire of looking at something like it. Working in a dairy farm also gave me the chance to learn a little about that livelihood.

My flight training gave me the unique opportunity to explore the Earth from the skies! This was taken over Toronto, Ontario.

Since I have my pilots license I was able to make use of it in Whitehorse and had the chance to fly to Kluane National Park in a instructional flight to see the ice fields!

I used to be a pilot in training, I now have my PPL (Private Pilot's License). Though its been a few years now since I have flown, I remain very grateful to the incredible opportunities that flying opened up to me.

My workaway in the Chilcotin gave me some experience of working with my hands and handling tools such as chainsaws. This particular picture depicts a typical day of logging and then cutting the log into several smaller pieces for firewood, which I also had the experience of splitting.

I volunteered in the PanAm games in 2015. It was an amazing experience and I had the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world.

This was taken up in the Western Ghats in Southern India. I enjoy experiences hiking and travelling to remote places

My stay at Janice and Darryl's home was a welcome break after months on the road. I made a last minute request to see if they could accommodate me. Janice was quick to respond and was very detailed and clear in her response which I was grateful for. Last minute planning can be stressful but she made it easy to coordinate and I ended up booking my… read more train ticket to Watrous just a few days after I sent out my request.
I was received by Janice and Darryl at the train station and they immediately set my mind at ease and gave me a warm welcome. I was made to feel right at home from the moment I set foot into their house. I was touched and inspired by their genuine hospitality and their openness and honesty with their guests.
Both Darryl and Janice are very generous, taking good care of their guests. I was treated to unique Asian cuisine (in Saskatchewan of all places), taken to a dog show and street festival in Saskatoon, a pow wow, 6 days of camping, wings nights, drinks at the local pub, shown a hutterite colony, taken to a local art exhibit, Nokomis museum, coffee with the local farmers and probably a few more events that don't come to mind right now. My point being that in the short time I had the good fortune of spending at their home they went out of their way to show me as much as they could, setting a new standard for what it means to be an excellent host. No day was uneventful.
Janice is great company, open to discussions on life, and is full of good humor. I was inspired by her life stories which she shared with honesty. She made it clear that the Golden rule in their home is to just speak your mind. She took great care in explaining how her homestead and farm works. With patience she answered the many questions I had and I am grateful for that as I definitely learned a thing or two (or three!). I am inspired also by her productivity, the fact that she was able to create such a diverse brood of chickens and other birds as well as have the flock of goats and the other animals shoes that she definitely takes her hobby farm seriously.
Darryl is a calming and friendly presence in the house. I came to admire his patience and gentle spirit. He also made me rethink my notions on big corporate farms. He showed me how their farm works and explained patiently how it is that their family and just a couple of other helpers are able to manage a 5000 acre farm! One fond memory of Darryl is in Saskatoon where we went to a street festival. I stopped to listen to a street performer who was good but not receiving much attention. He turned to see that I had stopped and came to stand by me, handing me a toonie to give the performer. I was really touched by his genuine and fatherly manner that evening, especially after years of handling things on my own in Canada.
I have lots more to say but I should wrap it up. I count myself fortunate to have come across these good people who took me in and cared for me. I will always think of them when I think of Saskatchewan. I hope to keep in touch and visit them once more in the future. Janice and Darryl, thank you for all that you did for me, I am indebted to you for such good hospitality. I hope you will visit me one day in India!
