Travelling
Description
Hello! We’re Oscar and Mucha, a couple from the UK, setting off on an adventure Eastbound ->! We were intending to travel (mostly) overland through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia from October to June; however, since starting this pilgrimage, we have encountered many unexpected obstacles, mainly in the way of visa entry with Mucha’s passport - something which has felt very unjust, especially when Mucha has been a UK resident her whole life. So far we’ve had an amazing time exploring some remote parts of Thailand and working on a permaculture farm, planting rice at a wonderful and unique organic farm in Kedah, Malaysia, and now we're in Sumatra, enjoying the different Indonesian cultures and looking to head east to Java and beyond. This is our first time backpacking in this way, so it’s a big adventure for us, and we have really fallen for the overwhelming generosity, trust and kindness of people in this part of the world!
Oscar (31):
I’m originally from rural Norfolk, where I am currently residing. For many years, I’ve dreamed of traveling to this part of the world, and I’ve finally reached a point in my life where circumstances allow it, and having saved just enough money. I’ve recently quit my job, and this trip is part of my journey to discover something new, both personally and professionally. I have a deep interest in nature, meditation, yoga and Eastern philosophy, particularly Buddhism and Taoism. I’m passionate about helping the environment and exploring the intersection between ecology and human wellbeing, and I’m hoping this trip will enrich my perspective and help guide me to a meaningful career or new skills in these areas. I’m soon looking to entirely re-train (potentially in arboriculture) after some time in the music industry and in unfulfilling menial jobs, to live my life every day in line with what I value most, to hopefully make a positive difference in the world. I’m very excited to gain more volunteering experience through Workaway because I believe volunteering is one of the most meaningful ways to connect with others, especially when there are no ulterior incentives. The simplicity of human connection and nature are, to me, the foundations of well-being and the reasons why I believe in Workaway’s mission of cultural exchange, while also acting as an incredible opportunity to give compassionately - I think it’s so important to understand how different people live in different places to be able to do so thoughtfully and whole-heartedly.
Mucha (24):
Hi! I’m originally from Zimbabwe but grew up in the UK. My upbringing was semi-traditional, which gave me a strong appreciation for being open-minded and inclusive, but I’ve had to challenge some of the norms I was raised with, which has only made me more curious about the world. Being a Black woman from a country with a complex history around race, I’ve really come to see how important it is to break down barriers and build connections with people from all walks of life. This is also what sparked my love for philosophy—things like stoicism, existentialism, and Buddhism really resonate with me, and I’ve found that meditation helps me stay balanced. I just finished my degree in philosophy and politics, and I’m super passionate about writing, creativity, and personal growth. Connecting with people and different cultures has been such a big part of my journey, whether through my work in hospitality or being a student ambassador. I’ve learned the value of teamwork, listening, and being there for others. For me, travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about really connecting with people, hearing their stories, and learning from their experiences. I’m so excited to meet new people on this journey and build connections that show how much we all have in common.
We’re both looking forward to this journey as a chance to not just explore new places, but to grow, learn, and connect with people from different backgrounds. Workaway feels like the perfect platform to dive deeper into local cultures and contribute in ways that go beyond the typical traveler’s path. We’re excited to engage with communities, learn new skills, and share our own experiences along the way. Whether it’s through volunteering, exchanging ideas, or even playing tennis, we’re eager to embrace every opportunity, give back, and create meaningful connections.
Looking forward to meeting you!

We are both fascinated by languages but have never had a chance to learn in the "right" way, having never lived outside of the UK! Mucha speaks some Shona due to her Zimbabwean upbringing. We are interested in the possibility of teaching English on a basic level and to go from there, and would love to learn about the local languages along our way.Skills and knowledge we'd like to share or learn

What else ...
We're very easy-going and open to different lifestyles, and of course love to have fun! Though we can both benefit from some introspective time, we do love the occasional boogie. Hikes and outdoor activities are some of our favourite things to do in our spare time, and we're open to trying new things! We will try to remember to bring a deck of cards in case you don't have any and if you have any instruments then Oscar would love to have a jam!
