Description
Hi! I’m Mike, a 31-year-old Dutch traveller with a positive attitude, plenty of enthusiasm, and a genuine curiosity about people and the world around me.
I’ve spent the last three years living, travelling, and working around Australia, where I had the opportunity to meet amazing people from all walks of life and gain experience in a variety of jobs. About two weeks ago I arrived in New Zealand, and I’m excited to continue my journey, meet new people, and become part of meaningful projects through Workaway.
For me, travelling is about much more than visiting beautiful places. It’s about connecting with people, learning new skills, experiencing different ways of living, and giving something back wherever I stay. I love being involved in projects and seeing the progress that’s made through teamwork and hard work.
I would describe myself as reliable, hardworking, easygoing, and open-minded. I’m someone who enjoys a challenge and likes stepping outside my comfort zone. I take a genuine interest in other people and believe everyone has a story to tell and something to teach. Personal growth has always been important to me, and I’m always looking for opportunities to develop myself and learn something new.
My work experience has been quite varied. Before travelling, I worked for a government housing agency, where I learned the importance of communication, empathy, and helping people through difficult situations. During my travels in Australia, I worked in hospitality and later spent several months on a large dairy farm in Tasmania. Farm work introduced me to a completely new industry, and I quickly discovered how much I enjoy practical, hands-on work, being outdoors, and being part of a hardworking team.
At this stage of my journey, one of my biggest goals is to significantly improve my Spanish before travelling to Chile later this year. I’m looking for an environment where I can immerse myself in a different culture while contributing to a meaningful project. Alongside helping out, I also dedicate a few hours each day to self-studying Spanish, as becoming conversational is one of my main personal goals for the coming months.
Outside of work and studying, I enjoy staying active and making the most of the outdoors. Hiking is one of my favourite ways to explore a new place, and I also enjoy swimming, playing tennis, and playing squash. I’m fascinated by off-grid living, renewable energy, and sustainable systems, so I’d love the opportunity to learn more if your project involves any of those.
I always try to bring a positive attitude, respect for other people’s home and lifestyle, and a willingness to help wherever I’m needed. Whether it’s gardening, maintenance, painting, farming, building, looking after animals, or helping around the house, I’m happy to roll up my sleeves and get involved.
For me, the ideal Workaway is one where I can contribute with enthusiasm, learn practical skills, improve my Spanish, and share experiences with people from different backgrounds. I believe those kinds of cultural exchanges are what make travelling truly rewarding.
I’m looking forward to meeting wonderful people, sharing experiences, learning new skills, and hopefully leaving every place a little better than I found it. If you think I’d be a good fit for your project, I’d love to hear from you! -
