Hi! I’m Cécile, 23 years old and I’m from the Netherlands. Currently I'm travelling in southern Europe to catch some sun. I travel through Workawaying, Couchsurfing and just saying yes : ). So please please text me if you have a cool opportunity, I'd love to experience and contribute in everything.
After summer break my plan is to travel in the Balkan countries, but I'm down to go wherever the bus and train can take me!

More about me: I’m a culture junk! I like going to museums and I love making music. I play a little bit of guitar, piano, ukulele and recorder. I’m into reading, and a little bit of writing once in a while. I also like baking (and cooking) and generally making stuff with my hands, like watercolor, woodwork and clay (although I'm not very experienced). Lately I'm really into anything to do with fabric; knitting, sewing and crocheting.
I love spending time outdoors, walking or bicycling. And at last, I’m passionate about philosophical questions, like how we could make the world a better place and how time works. Well, we might say I’m a generalist. I’m interested in the whole wide world, which sometimes it makes it hard to stay focused.
Last two years I had my first job, and I want to see some of Europe before I start my new adventure. I've worked in marketing and my next job goal is to study Cultural Heritage to eventually work in a historical/heritage organisation.

Creating is my everything. If you need a birthday cake, I'm your (wo)man! Also for home made birthday cards, and custom garlands. I love craft! Sewing, writing, cooking, weaving, digital design, you name it! To illustrate, I'm a member of the NJN, roughly translated as the 'Dutch Youth Union for Nature'. We organise camps were we go into nature to hunt for different kinds of plants and insect etc. I always have some home-made treat in my backpack, last time I made elderflower syrup! And I most times carry my self sewed garland to hang around the camping site. I also write and edit content for our magazine and social media.

In my 'working life' I've worked the last two years as (mostly social media) marketeer for a b2b magazine publisher. I know everything about the Facebook/Instagram/Twitter/LinkedIn shizzle. I can help set up Meta Business Suite and would love to help with creating a brand identity in Canva.
Before that job I worked in a bookshop, which also include postal service. I liked the contact with the customers, even though they're sometimes mad at the postal company, as usual. When there is time left, I was the headmistress of shop window. Decorating the display is what I absolutely liked the most!

I'm always full of ideas, and so I've competed in several contests. I've competed with essays and a short film, and I've send 2 ideas to the municipalty to improve our town for the youth.

It's already a while back but I have to share this last experience! As an intern, I gave drama-lessons to middle-school kids. And togheter with the teacher I helped, we pull off an epic theater show for our amateur theaterclub. We even got money from the school for our decor, which we haven't had before that play.
As I like theater, I became also an intern for an official theater. I supported the head-stage manager. It was an amazing time, in which I've learned a lot about all the weird desires the artists had : ).

St. Marienthal was a really interesting experience. I entered the magnificent building and schwester Anna-Maria was right there to give me a very warm welcome, and so did Mother Superiour.
I'm not religious, and that wasn't a problem, although the sisters are pleased if you are.

I really didn't know what to expect. A monastry is where they pray,… read more that's what I knew. Every guest is allowed to join the prayers, so I did once a day (5 prayers, one moss a day).
The monastry is a quiet place. Everybody is very dedicated to their job. It's a great place to think, to focus on your inner voice, to go to bed early, and to be silent. I'm not that silent and I'm not an early sleeper, so I sometimes had a little bit of a hard time.

It really is better to speak German. The sisters are very polite but if you can't speak German you can't have a conversation. But Schwester Anna-Maria is always down for a talk and probably is the laughiest nun I'll ever met.

I really enjoyed my work. I made strohsterne (stars made of straw) to sell at christmas times. It was meditative and I had a great time with the other workawayers that where working in the shop as well.

One thing I must mention: the room I got was absolutely amazing. I had my own bathroom, a lot of rooms have it. So although we have to be silent at 7.30 pm, I still had the freedom to do a lot of things in my room.

There is a structure in the day. Meals, prayers, work. I kinda had a hard time with figuring out what to do with my free time, because it we're little gaps during the day. But I was absolutely free to skip prayers and meals if I wanted to. So I skipped dinners a couple of times to go swimming or hiking (with the sandwiches I packed).

The train connection is allright so I had a really great time as well when I took the weekend of to go to Dresden and Prague. Schwester Anna-Maria was always caring about if I was doing well wherever I was.

I enjoyed my time with the other guests at mealtime and everybody is always very happy to help. Again, I liked my job, I liked my room, I liked the workawayers. But St. Marienthal gets 4 stars from me, because I just am a little too extrovert, energetic and, above all, too loud for a monastry. It's not because of St. Marienthal. A monastry in general isn't that great of a fit for me apparently. But wow, what was it indeed a cultural experience. I now know a lot I didn't knew before.

Thanks to Schwester Anna-Maria for all the laughs and the talks and that you were always happy to answer my questions (I ask a lot of them, quit brutal ones as well, because yes I'm very Dutch, as Schwester said).

We were so happy to have gotten the chance to host Cecile. She is a warm and genuine person with a massive heart. While she was here she became our resident designer and seam-stresss, showing her considerable talent with the sewing machine. She was popular member of the group and worked very hard throughout her stay.
