    Description

Hi there! We’re Espen and Yulia — a nature-loving, adventure-seeking couple excited to welcome you to our special spot in Northern Norway.
Espen is a local chef born and raised in Tromsø who works on sailing boats (you’ll find him cruising around Svalbard in the summer!). Yulia, his girlfriend, lives in the city and works in hospitality. She's been a Workaway volunteer for years and is now thrilled to be on the hosting side, creating memorable experiences for others!
Espen's cabin, Sollia, is nestled in the peaceful valley of Oldervikdalen, about 45 minutes from Tromsø. It’s been in Espen’s family since it was built in 1967, and he’s lovingly transformed it into a warm and welcoming retreat. Over the years, it's become a haven for friends and travelers looking for a break from the city — or a safe place to wait out a snowstorm!
This summer, while Espen is away sailing, we’re looking for someone to help Yulia take care of Marina — the sweetest, sassiest cat you'll ever meet (and definitely the one in charge around here!). Since Yulia works in town, she can’t be at the cabin full-time but will visit as often as she can to hang out, tackle some maintenance tasks, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings with you.
You’re more than welcome to come into Tromsø to visit Yulia, too — she’d love to show you around or give tips on what to see and do in the area!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

As a volunteer, you'll get to experience life above the Arctic Circle and discover the unique culture of Northern Norway. In summer season the sun doesn't set here which gives you perfect opportunity to enjoy our beautiful nature. There are many outdoor adventures you can hop on here - hiking, fishing, picking mushrooms, kayaking. Tromsø is the capital of the north and there is a lot of culture here, plenty festivals and events are going on. Sadly, I will be sailing but my girlfriend Yulia is here to show you around the city and the area and introduce you to Norwegian culture.

    Help

The most important task is that Marina (the cat) needs some company. Looking after her and giving her some attention and cuddles is what we . Maybe you can help Yulia with some of the smaller maintanence tasks when she is there, planting veggies, or some painting, and collecting frewood.

The cabin has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a cozy living room, an indoor incineration toilet, and an outdoor shower. Cold running water is available. You’ll have your own private bedroom, and most of the time, you’ll have the whole cabin to yourself. Yulia will drop by occasionally to stay and help out whenever her schedule allows, and there might be the occasional visit from friends.
You are welcome to eat the food you can find in the cabin but since I am not there, the food is not going to be provided. I do have a fully equipped kitchen and spices for you to cook yourself.
There’s also a parking spot right outside the cabin.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

The cabin is a peaceful, quiet spot—perfect for anyone looking to take a break from the city life. It’s a great place to unwind in nature, dive into creative projects, read, or just take some time to reflect.
There is also gear for hiking and fishing, a bicycle, a slack line and a lot of instruments that you can enjoy using during your time here.

Having a car is a huge plus. There are buses to the city between 8 AM and 4 PM, but having your own car gives you way more freedom to explore the area and makes grocery runs a lot easier—the closest shop is about 30 km away.
