    Description

We are a small beach and kiting hostel in Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka, an area which is famous for kite surfing, dolphin watching, snorkeling/diving and well, wild donkeys. We are just 50 meters from the ocean beach and about 1.5 kilometers from the main kite surf lagoon, but still way off the main tourist trail in Sri Lanka. We've got your normal hostel stuff like hammocks, games, communal kitchen, etc., plus we are in a good spot for kite surfing and near some good schools and rental places. We are also in a good location for dolphins and sometimes whales from Nov to April and for other water sports. River and jeep safaris to Wilpattu National Park leave from here, as well as trips to Yapahuwa, a 13th century ruin. We are about three hours drive north of the international airport, and about four hours southwest of the famous ruins and city of Anuradhapura. Kandy is about five hours by bus to the southeast.

We have two local employees who do most cleaning, cooking, laundry, maintenance and delivery services.

Sri Lanka is a fascinating country with diverse cultures, languages and religions. Just on our little peninsula we have Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Catholics all living together and interacting peacefully. Although the tourism is growing fast here, we still basically live in a village full of coconut farmers and fisherman. I've learned quite a lot about Sri Lankan life and culture, and you can definitely interact with the locals in this job, be it staff, shopkeepers, neighbors, etc.

As well, the hostel owners and staff are Sri Lankan, American and Ukrainian, and together we speak English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Sinhala and Tamil. Just choose a language to learn or practice!

There is also the opportunity to learn kite surfing or wind surfing, both of which are popular here. Diving is also available, mostly Dec-March.

We are looking for all the normal beach hostel help - cleaning, guest relations, gardening, general maintenance, occasional beach or neighborhood clean-up. Kite surfing experience is a plus but not necessary.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

A dormitory bed in a 4-bed dorm is guaranteed, or a private room is available when one is free and if you re-make the room for the next guest.

Food is not provided, but is cheap, especially non-meat items, and we have kitchens to use.

    What else ...

We are in a fairly remote location, so it's beautiful and quiet, but don't expect thumping discos every night or a huge party scene like Thailand or Goa. Kite surfing is the biggest attraction here. If you want to learn, we can recommend the best schools, but we don't teach kite surfing ourselves.

Other things to do with your time off would be other water sports like kayaking or wind surfing, river and jeep safaris in Wilpattu, ruins (but not super close), biking, scooter/moto rental, beach time, board games... There are also a couple of small beach bars and restaurants nearby.
