    Description

Hello! Our beach hostel is still closed, but we have a two-week to longer opportunity for up to two workawayers to help us open a new digital nomad space in Kandy. The help will include light physical stuff like cleaning/preparing rooms, visiting retail and service stores in Kandy for information/costings/purchasing, other errand running, doing online research, and helping receive and host guests once we are open. Our property is located in the hills above Kandy and close to some good hiking, so an affinity for walking/hiking is definitely a plus for this project. In fact, part of the work can be walking some trails and logging them on a hiking app if the volunteers are up for it :-)

You'll be helping with us (Doug and Zhenya), our Sri Lankan partner Kithsiri and local staff such as cleaners and cafe workers which we will hire before the hotel opens.

You'll have a private room with a balcony and a wonderful view of the Kandy Hills, and there will be plenty of working areas (more and more in fact as we complete the project) After opening, you may need to move to a dorm bed or a nearby house on nights when guest rooms are booked, but that would be a few weeks down the road... There is a kitchen and dining area on the property, with a couple of basic stores within walking distance. We are on a bus route with frequent buses to Kandy/Kandy Lake (about 15 mins), or a tuktuk is a little faster and costs around 1 euro. (And walking is about 30 mins, but not flat...)

Breakfast and dinner are included, but may require self-preparation.

Please contact us if you're interested or have any other questions. We are looking forward to finding at least 2 ambitious, positive and responsible workawayers to help us launch an exciting new project!

Please note: our current workaway opportunity is in Kandy, not our normal beach hostel in Kalpitiya, so the information below pertains to that...

Kandy is a fascinating city set in the beautiful central mountains of Sri Lanka. It is most famously a center of Buddhism and the location of the Temple of the Tooth, but all faiths of Sri Lanka are represented in the city, and there are several interesting and historical temples, mosques and cathedrals in the area as well. There is a lot of history and religion in Kandy, but it's also a center of education, student life and intellectualism in Sri Lanka. Basically you will encounter all kinds of different people and facets of Sri Lankan life in Kandy, in a setting that is many times prettier and more liveable than Colombo.

On this particular workaway, you will be helping closely with our partner from Kandy, Kithsiri. He is a great friend as well as host, as he's been working in Sri Lankan tourism for over 20 years. He speaks excellent English and is always up for "a little drink" on the balcony after a day of work. You'll undoubtedly meet his awesome family as well as other Sri Lankan friends of ours there, and some of the help such as researching and purchasing will take you into interesting, perhaps educational, situations that a normal tourist may not encounter.

Although we can't always be there, we love spending time in Kandy and find it to be a great mix of authentic culture and modern conveniences. And I personally never get tired of the monkeys :-)

    What else ...

Please note: our current workaway opportunity is in Kandy, and there is information about that in the main description. The info below pertains to our normal beach hostel positions, which are not available at the moment.

We are in a fairly remote location, so it's beautiful and quiet, but don't expect thumping discos every night or a huge party scene like Thailand or Goa. Kite surfing is the biggest attraction here. If you want to learn, we can recommend the best schools, but we don't teach kite surfing ourselves.

Other things to do with your time off would be other water sports like kayaking or wind surfing, river and jeep safaris in Wilpattu, ruins (but not super close), biking, scooter/moto rental, beach time, board games... There are also a couple of small beach bars and restaurants nearby.

Yes! We are in fact building a space for digital nomads. The wifi will be good from the start, and more and more facilities like desks, printer, projector, workplaces will become available as we get ready to open.
