Description
This farm is a sanctuary for escaping busy city life and provides volunteers with the opportunity to gain practical skills, help outside, and enjoy nature. Although not certified, all products of the farm are free from all chemicals and pesticides. The surrounding area is rich in culture, history and gastronomy. Selçuk is one of the earliest settlements of humanity, where the ancient site Ephesus was built in 6000BC. Also the ancient city of magnesia is minutes away, the beach is roughly 40 minutes away, the old village şirince which is well known for wine and architecture is 30 minutes away and also kuşadası (a touristic beach side town) is 14km away. So in summary there is plenty to see for the volunteers time off. There are other famous touristic cities a couple hours away by bus that can be visited on the weekends off.
Farm is located in a village called Gökçealan of Selçuk province, city of İzmir which is located in the west of Turkey. This region has hot and dry summers and wet and mild winters. The farm is 3 hectares in size and the main tasks is with figs and olive trees. Also we have chickens, geese, goats and a cow and countless cats and dogs that we care for. We have our own vegetable garden and a small vineyard where we produce our own small batch wine for personal consumption. We are a family of 4. Mum and dad are both retired, one daughter is a veterinarian and the other one works in aviation. There is also two permanent workers in the farm helping with the daily chores.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are happy to exchange Turkish culture and cuisine with yours. We will be sharing a knowledge of organic agriculture and homesteading with our volunteers. They will learn about growing olives, figs and their processing and also working with gardens and animals. There is also a chance to learn about grape and wine culturing in September.
Help
In the end of March and April we are starting seeds, preparing the vegetable gardens for planting. We also are planting seedlings into the ground and doing garden chores. Also we may require assistance in cleaning the goose pond, and chicken coop. The main areas we need help are from mid July till the end of August for fig harvesting and drying. This process involves picking figs by hand from the ground when they mature. Then laying them on beds to be sun dried and after the drying period we preserve them for storage. In late November we have our olive harvest which involves hand picking olives from the trees, casing and taking them to the factory to be pressed into the golden elixir olive oil.
