I absolutely loved it! I spent 2 weeks in June in their private room and loved every minute of it. Jeni is very considerate and kind, she was very open about what she needed and made sure that I was doing alright each step of the way! Baby Alanna is adorable and always reliable to a laugh. She is so fun to hang out with and its so amazing to watch
… read more her learn! Bella and Latifia are wonderful company, each with different and lovable personalities. Walks with them to the field and beach were such a source of joy. John is great to be around, his sarcasm stays fresh and deciphering his strong Irish accent is a very enjoyable (and worthwhile) challenge. I feel I got to see so many sights in the area, ate some positively amazing food (including Jeni's risotto) and felt at home in their cozy house. It was the perfect workaway experience and I would recommend to anyone who loves dogs, the outdoors, fresh veggies and has a positive attitude. Three words: it was perfect!
First of all, I stayed at with Jeni for 2 months to be exact. Initially, I thought I could only stay for two weeks but to my luck I could stay longer. Jeni and John are great people. Jeni is really kind and nice and really wonderful! Just one small detail shows what a great soul Jeni is. She always asked so politely
… read more if I liked to do the work instead of demanding it from me. That made me feel so much welcome. Also, I wanted to leave my last host as quickly as possible and I was able to join Jeni within a couple of days. John is a lovely lad with great stories to listen to and lots to talk about. I enjoyed his company a lot, trying to understand his jokes and his saying was so funny and working with him was great, too. Last but not least and most importantly, having Latifa and Bella around was just sometimes a bit annoying with their barking BUT being able to cuddle them, play with them, walk with them, rub their bellies and just having around not one but two fluffy, beautiful and warm dogs is so amazing and I loved every single second of it!
The work:
It was so great! First of all, everything was so relaxed. I loved Jeni’s and John’s time schedule, getting to bed late and getting up late in the morning was so nice. Even when I went very spontaneously on a trip for a few days they were so flexible about it. And of course, doing this kind of work is the best kind of work you could ever imagine! The main task was to walk the dogs once or twice a day for one or two hours. Walking to the beach close by every day or to a field and just generally playing with two dogs is the greatest “work” I ever had to do. I absolutely loved it. Also, doing gardening, digging holes or digging in the vegetable patch, painting the shed or the house and doing a little bit of cleaning inside the house was so easy.
The cultural exchange:
I learned a lot not only from Jeni but from John as well. Eating a vegetarian or vegan diet was something totally new to me. But after my last host I was really sick of eating meat. So, it was a real pleasure to learn what great alternatives are out there for still cooking and eating delicious meals. Most of the times I cooked food for myself and I especially enjoyed cooking for Jeni and for John. Also, I learned a lot from John and also from him as a carpenter. The village of Kinvara was not that special, it was just a village. But the area around Kinvara is stunning! The pub close by was nice and the landscape was so beautiful. On the one side, you had the view of the Burren Mountains and the national park which are also great for walking and hiking and on the other side you had the bay of Galway and you could see the Connemara National Park and the mountains behind it. It was a bit further away from Galway but also not too far away. It was calm and peaceful which is a great adjustment to have a relaxing time. I was able to watch a lot of movies and shows I always wanted to see and I could do stuff for university where I never really found the time before. Generally, it was really refreshing. Not to forget, going to Galway from time to time was great! It is a great place to be with lots to do and to see.
The accommodation:
It was like I was staying in a hotel! I had a room and a bed for myself that is bigger than what I have at home. Not to forgot, having a bathroom for yourself is such a luxury. There was always enough food in the fridge and the cupboards and I am someone who eats a lot and maybe a little too much food. There was a bicycle that I could you use and sometimes or if when I had an emergency they would drive me, too.
To conclude, these two months were the best experience I had so far with workaway. It was everything I could just imagine. Jeni and John, you are so kind-hearted and you were so helpful, friendly and welcoming to me. I still miss having Latifa and Bella around. And being the beautiful county of Galway was amazing! Everything was perfect. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

I spent around 3 month, since October to December (2021), with Jeni and her beutifful Ladies: Latifa's Queen, Bella and Abbeylish. It was a wonderful experience, Jeni is a very good host, she made me feel like I was in my home. All her friends and neigbours too.

Flor and Lucas spent some time with me and my 2 dogs in the Irish countryside in February 2020. They love animals, and they have done a lot of things at a very young age, making them a conscious, interesting

They walked my dogs and looked after them, as well as thoroughly cleaning the house for viewings (I was selling my house), and generally keeping the house and garden tidy and clean. We stayed for two weeks with Jeni and her lovely dogs and we really enjoyed it! Sabine is a very enthusiastic workawayer who loves to travel and experience local culture as well as sharing her own. She spent a lot of time with my neighbours who are farmers and loved going to the bog and looking around their farm, they really enjoyed having her around! I spent 10 days in Jeni and Latifa's house in AbbeyKnockmoy, in the beautiful Galway's countryside. It was so relaxing, Jeni is lovely and open mind, Latifa is so cute. During my stay, i had two dogs with me, Latifa and her friend Bella. My work was so easy and good : go walk with the dogs in the fields or near the river and do some gardening.

Elizabeth was a lovely person to have around and Latifa and I thoroughly enjoyed her company. She was talkative, chatty, sociable and really got into the life here. I remember having a migraine one afternoon and Elizabeth appeared with a lovely home made soup - I felt very taken care of :-) Would love to see Elizabeth again and wish her all the best back in the US of A!

Jeni is a very kind, considerate and friendly host that I would highly recommend to anyone that loves dogs, long walks and a clean environment.

We spent two weeks at the end of October at Jeni's house in County Galway. We had our own bedroom and we shared a bathroom with her two lodgers.
We were guests in the sharehouse, and shared food with Jeni (who is vegetarian) and one of the other lodgers. For breakfast we'd make porridge and there were eggs. For lunch, there was bread with
… read more cheese and a couple of other condiments. There was usually some veges, eggs and pasta to cook up for dinner.
All our formal work was outside which was perfect for us. We weeded and tidied the garden, planted and replanted bushes, helped make stone garden edges, pruned apple trees and walked the dogs (there were two house dogs - Jeni's Latifa and one of the lodger's). It was great to see the instant results in the garden!
Sightseeing was coordinated with Jeni's schedule. We caught a lift into Galway for a day in the city which was lovely - some of the best fish and chips we've had in Ireland at McDonagh's! Another day we caught a lift to Galway and then took a bus to Clifden to explore the Sky Road loop walk (spectacular!) Noting, we found public transport in Ireland isn't cheap, and most journeys in this area go through/from Galway.
Jeni was taking Latifa for a run at The Burren one Sunday, so we tagged along and enjoyed a good walk there too.
While the closely town of Abbeyknockmoy is only a 25 minute walk down the road, about half that walk is along a highway with cars going 80+ km/hr. We ventured to the pub a couple of afternoons, making sure to get home before dark. Otherwise, after a morning of work, we enjoyed afternoons reading in the warm house. (It was starting to get quite cold out!)
Jeni's place is surrounded by beautiful countryside. A number of Ireland's great sights are within a few hours too, so we'd recommend having a car to get around and make the most of your stay. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.
