  • Description

Please, where possible, contact this host in Italian

This project started due to my property outgrowing my kids, they have flown the nest and so it is now left to me. A place where olive trees and fruit trees grow...over grown in fact. A place which is in need of loving hands to keep it afloat and moving forward in a direction where people of liked minds can share and enjoy a place which has so much to offer. I have to be honest, hosting non Italian speakers scares me somewhat. But I feel that we can all help one another some way. Help me to understand your ways as much as I need your support to keep my property flourishing and back to away where it is buzzing with activity and life.
This has been in my family for a very long time and has a wonderful history and most of it is waiting to be shared. I'm excited about where this shall take me and how wonderful it will be to meet different people from all over and open a door to an area which is less visited than most in the south.

We are working on redeveloping an olive orchard where oil is produced. A great place for people to find time to work and be involved in a project which will grow. Eusebio only speaks Italian and Calabrian (:) dialect), yet, there can always be a cultural exchange, you will learn about food, the land and dreams.

  • Help

Currently need help with collecting olives, completion of putting up a fence around the property.
Pruning trees and clearing of the area around the olive trees.

Help with the restoration of old farm building, and the future production of vegetables and fruit.

Depending on when you come you will experience different aspects of what goes on in this village tucked away in Aspromonte.

At the moment looking for long term stays.
long is at least 3 weeks+
Couples, individuals and even families depending on the number of course are welcome:

Olive groves and the oil-normally from October -Feb (cleaning of land all year round) - it is manual work so outdoor wear and boots needed as warm / wet weather gear

Assistance with transforming a small outdoor area into a green and possibly edible garden - which we are hoping will be done or start once the fencing is complete (sheep love vegies)

Someone creative for the additions to a house yet to be finished

Building from recycled material - this needs creativity and incentive

Please keep in mind you will need outdoor working gear and of course if you can bring some work gloves so you have your own pair (if possible)

A normal day will look like this:
Breakfast in the morning before 8am
Working day starts from approx., 8am (working for approx. 5 hours)
Lunch (together / normally) at approx. 1:30
    Afternoon free
    Dinner between 7:30 / 8pm (together)
We help with cleaning and maintaining the surrounding neat and tidy together. So the understanding is everyone pitches in to help.
You have two free days - they may be two days together or apart - we also ask this to be flexible depending on what we have going on. 5 days on 2 off.
There are times you may work independently on a project once you are comfortable and can work at your pace to complete it.
SOMETIMES: We work the afternoon and ask our volunteers to be flexible.

  • Accommodation

We are located in Aspromonte...the town is Santa Cristina d'Aspromonte, a quaint, small town with a dwindling population located in the far south of Calabria. Currently population 500.

The accommodation is located either on the property or super close to the centre of town.

A shared bathroom and all common areas. There is a room with two single beds and a room with one single bed.

The space for campervans and tents is on the property, this boasts a covered outdoor kitchen and toilet/shower. It's equipped with all that is needed to cook.

Special food requirement may be accommodate but would be useful if you are able to bring things, that way there is no problems of you getting the things you want (especially as we are quite remote). That said: most if not all meals are eaten together, our production mostly local and in season. This is a mountain area, so you find the typical southern Italian cuisine: tasty and genuine, can also be mainly vegetarian.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Here in Aspromonte we are immersed in nature. The area is quiet and is a great place where people can find time to discover some quaint places.
There are some fabulous guided tours in the area that you can take part in. They are usually on Sundays and are affordable (around € 10-20 for a guided information trek).

Transportation is minimal and for those arriving it is important that everyone understands that I am not always available; it's important to be able to work independently as I work on multiple things at the same time.

Do your research on how to get around if you don't have a car or other means of transportation. Trekking, camping, horse riding, off-road or road bike, relaxation, historic cities to discover and much more that I can't even think of.

You can also work on your own projects (photography, painting, drawing etc) and share your skills, language and / or culture.
    Additional information for the Volunteers
Here in Aspromonte we are surrounded by nature and the project is clearing a beautiful part in which project oil and….is evolving. The area is peaceful and a great place where people can find time to work on themselves and assist with the growth of the project.

Transport is minimal and for those who arrive it is important that you are also happy to work autonomously.

Do your research on how to get around if you do not have a car or other means of transport. Walking is the main means of transport to the property, and a good pair of shoes and outdoor wear is needed.

There are fabulous guided tours around the area in which you can take part in, which are usually on a Sunday and affordable. approx 10-20 euro for a guided informative trek. And also it would be a pleasure to show you local stomping grounds.

How to get to your site

We are remote, but you can get to us via bus from Reggio Calabria
(there is one that arrives here in the afternoon) leaves Reggio at approximately 13:40 and gets here at about 16:00 a great bus ride via the coastal towns.
Take note of these you may want to visit them on your days off. You can get to Gioia Tauro (RC) by train or bus and we may be able to arrange to have you picked up it is approximately 28 km’s away. You may want to ride here if you have a bike or even get here by car. Or from here there is a bus which leaves near the station at 13:18.

We have two buses a day which depart early morning from Santa Cristina D'Aspomonte (05:30 - always check times) to Reggio (ETA 07:50), it does connect with other buses, the other one at 13:40 which arrives at 15:50.
The other bus at 6:50am departs the town and goes to Gioia Tauro - Good to know if you want a few days away and want to get connecting buses or trains.

From Reggio Calabria the buses depart at 06:20-13:40-18:00 all from the stop across the road from Stazione Lido (near Cesere Ice Cream Parlour) they take approx an hour and forty to reach the Village.

The town is Santa Cristina d’Aspromonte (RC) Southern Italy
PS always ask the drivers where they are heading and if they can drop you off at the Posta Officio

    Is there internet access? yes
    slow connection on the property.
