Description
Hi! We are a family of six, and live on a small 3 acre property in Lilydale, Tasmania.
Myself (Kylie) , my partner (Tanya), our three kids and their grandmother (Linda) live on the top of a small hill with a great view of Mt Arthur, and are a 20 minute drive away from Launceston. Lilydale is a cute little town with a couple of cafes, a takeaway shop and a small supermarket. Depending on when you come there are concerts/performances at the local club, as well as a regular market here in town.
When we bought this property it was just a house with an orchard. Since then we have added a tiny house, a potting shed and have been focussing on planting out the fields and establishing our gardens. Most of the help we need is just with gardening as it is a lot of work to keep it under control.
We are slowly adding to our menagerie. We currently have five chickens, one dog and two cats. We are planning to get some more chickens as well as ducks soon. The chickens and ducks' jobs are to scratch up the ground, eat the pests and look cute.
We are more than happy to have people from the LGBTQ+ community, neurodivergent, and gender non-conforming people stay—anyone looking for a safe, inclusive, and discrimination-free space would be welcome.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are a family of introverts and although we like a good conversations we do need time alone to charge our batteries. So if you need lots of company and engaging in hours of talking.....this is probably not the right place for you. Our house would suit more independent travellers. However, we are friendly and kind and will help you with any questions, language and local information.

Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.

Help
We're mostly after help with the garden as we are becoming older and are not able to do as much as before.
The type of work we need help with includes:
Weeding
Mulching
Planting
Pruning
General tasks
We are be happy for people to mix n match the hours of work. So for example you could do 2 days of 5 hours each, 5 days of 2 hours, or split it between 3-4 days and then have more time to travel around and do things you want.

Accommodation
We have a very small tiny home that has a queen size bed, a kitchenette and bathroom. It can sleep two people as it has a queen size bed, however the rest of the space is very small, so two people can stay but you would be sharing a bed and a small living space.
We would prefer it if you supply and cook your own food as our family tends to eat separately to each other (different food habits and neurodivergent needs). We're happy to provide things needed for breakfast (cereals/milks/tea/coffee) and other things from our vegetable garden, or eggs from our chickens, but we wouldn't be providing whole meals.
Our expectation would be that you provide and cook (lunch & dinner) for yourself in the tiny home (it has a small kitchen). This is mostly because we have 2 children with Autism, one mother is vegetarian and one is not - so we are already cooking several different foods for multiple people and it is quite stressful for us to feed our own family, so to feed another person would be difficult.
What else ...
As I said earlier we are quite introverted and tend to keep to ourselves so we are wanting people that don't expect us to socialise a lot, although we are happy to have casual conversations and answer any questions you may have.
The local buses don't run frequently so it would be best if you have your own transport arranged. However we would be happy to pick up and drop off from Launceston if needed.
Things you can do near Lilydale are: visit Lilydale Falls, hike Mount Arthur, and going to Hollybank Treetops Adventure. Within a 30-60 minutes drive you can go to the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, various wineries, berry farms and local beaches. Or you can use us as a launching pad for visiting Cradle Mountain (3hr drive), mountain biking at Derby (1hr drive), or visiting the Bay of Fires (2.5hr drive)
