    Description

We live on a 2 hectare property with the young Angas River running through. We have organic gardens with fruit trees, all sorts of berries, vegetable gardens with free roaming bantams, big layer hens, flower beds, lawns as well a goat on paddocks and a cute house cat.

Bernward is semi retired but still runs a sustainable architecture and building consultancy business part time from offices attached to the home. Barbara works at the local hospital.

We have been accommodating helpers since 2011 through various help exchange sites.

If you want a break from travelling in a non judgmental friendly family environment and you are open and self-motivated, this is the place for you.
This is not an action or party place but rather a place to start your journey inward to grow and get to know yourself and your interaction with others. Deep discussions are possible in a relaxed atmosphere. Be creative with great light, & scenery for painting and photography, writing, music and getting back to nature. A big woodworking workshop invites creativity.

We are a German/Australian Family living in Australia for 40 years. You will encounter German and Australian heritage and cuisine.
I enjoy teaching woodworking skills to our helpers with the option to learn how to fit out campervans and tiny houses.

Our house is well insulated to German standard warm and cosy in Winter with a "Kachelofen" (Tiled masonry heater) and cool in Summer.
A couple of times a week we heat up our Finnish Sauna and helpers are encouraged to join. A great place to open up, listen to yourself and have meaningful discussions.

Here comments through this and another help exchange site:

"If you want an extended family, genuine, interesting people you can rely on and a wholesome and fulfilling break from all the crazy, then this is the place for you. I’ve learnt a lot from the family, it has been a heart-warming experience that I have shared with them and I’ve made memories and friends I will never forget. This family was there for me in the toughest of times and it made all the difference. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and there is lots of garden and animal work to fill your days. If you are lost and need to find your way, if you need somewhere to belong along the way, then consider a stay with the family "

    Dear Bernward,
i can‘t say it often enough: THANK YOU for everything!
Since the beginning, when you picked me up from the airport with a big smile in your face and also at your home when I was meeting your wife Barbara I felt warmly welcome and comfortable.
I think I never met such a kind and carrying person like you. You were looking after my needs and respecting me as the person I am.
On our Zoom-meeting you called it „journey to the inside“ and wow…how right you have been!
Your home and your personality is a space where I discovered a new side of myself.
A place where my thoughts and feelings could settle down and become clear.
You lovely welcomed every mood and I never felt like I have to hide my emotions or let words unspoken wich wanted to come out loud.
It was easy to be honest around you.

I learned a lot about gardening and taking care of the household, a goat and chickens (I will miss them, too)
Moreover, it was the first time that I worked with wood and I kinda fell in love with it.
You teached me a lot of different things and believed in me when I was not.
And Sarah (long time workawayer), I didn’t expect that I will meet such a beautiful and powerful person like you!
Working and spending time together with the two of you gave me a lot of positive energie.
I love our vibes!! Singing and working with the flow of music…amazing!
When I was searching after Bernward I just needed to listen where I can hear someone hum ;)

I will miss you guys…a lot…and I am really glad that I already know that I will come again after a while.
It was an honor for me that I had been part of your family for the last three months!

    Help

Thank you for your interest in volunteering.

We appreciate help, enjoy young people and having an excuse to visit the beautiful and interesting places Adelaide, the hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia have to offer with them.

We are often booked 3 to 4 months in advance with mostly long-term guests.
This should not deter you to ask anyway as booked helpers sometimes cancel their spot.

Please read through all the text below and only apply if you think this is for you.

There is always help needed in garden and paddock: pampering the goat, looking after animals, weed control, planting, picking vegetables, berries, plums, apples and more in season, lawn mowing, making firewood, compost, clean up sheds and help in and around the house.

4 -5 hours easy help plus support in house & kitchen is expected.

No smokers & no highly perfumed body products please. Reasonable English or German speaking / understanding is expected to enable meaningful conversations.

We prefer longer stays (3 weeks min or more) after an initial "get to know" of a few days. Many helpers stay longer than planned and come back as they like the chance to relax and join a supporting family.

Sorry we cannot sign for 2.Visa

Enjoy your adventure, stay safe and many great hosts on the way!
