    Description

Hola! We are a Colombian-German family of four living in San Agustín, a small town in the south of Colombia.

I'm originally from Germany and have been living in Colombia for a few years now. My wife is Colombian and we have two little daughters, so there's usually quite a lot going on at home :) We speak a mix of Spanish, German and English and enjoy meeting people from other countries.

A little while ago we got our own finca, just a few minutes outside of San Agustín. It's a beautiful piece of land with lots of green around, but also quite a bit of work to do!

Our idea is to slowly turn it into a nice place where people can spend time outdoors, camp and enjoy the area. Maybe one day we'll have a small boutique hotel too. But that's still a long way off. Right now we're mostly working on the garden, fixing things, improving the outdoor areas and trying out different ideas.

We both have our normal family life and responsibilities, so everything is happening step by step. Some days we get quite a lot done, other days not so much, especially with two young kids around.

We thought Workaway could be a nice way to meet new people, get some help with our personal projects and hopefully learn a few things from each other.

We live here ourselves and currently don't have any locally paid staff. We'd love to welcome people who are easygoing, enjoy spending time outside and don't mind that not everything here is finished yet.

And of course, you're also welcome to just hang out with us, have a coffee, share a meal or tell us about your travels!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I think one of the nicest things about Workaway is getting to know people you probably wouldn't meet otherwise (I've been working in hotels & turism for many years, so that is my passion!).

Living with us, you'll get to see a bit of everyday family life in Colombia. My wife is from here and I'm from Germany, so even in our own home there's always a mix of cultures, languages and different ways of doing things.

We can share what we know about the region, local food, places to visit and life in Colombia. And if you're interested in Spanish, you'll definitely get some practice!

San Agustín is also a really interesting place, with its archaeological history, countryside and small villages around.

We'd love to learn from you as well. Maybe you know something about gardening or building things, maybe you can teach us a recipe from your country, or maybe you just have some good stories to share.

For us, the best part would be that after a few weeks we all feel like we've learned something new and had a good time together.

  • Help

    Help

There's always something to do around our finca, and since we're still at the beginning, the work can be quite different from one week to another.

At the moment we could mainly use some help with the garden, cutting grass, planting things, keeping the outdoor areas nice and doing small repairs or DIY projects. We also have a few ideas for decorating and making the place more comfortable.

If you know something about gardening, permaculture, working with wood or building simple things, that would be great! But you don't need to be an expert. We're also learning as we go.

We'd also be happy to meet creative people who enjoy photography, making things or helping us think of new ideas for the property.

Usually we'll decide together what needs to be done and what you feel comfortable helping with. We don't have a strict daily schedule and prefer to keep things flexible.

The help is mainly for our private home, garden and family projects, not for looking after paying guests or running a business.

This host offers a language exchange
Languages are a big part of our family life. I grew up speaking German, my wife speaks Spanish, and we also use English quite a lot (my wife is learing it at the moment). My wife would really like to improve her English, so she'd be very happy to have someone around to practice with. Our two daughters are also growing up with different languages, which is something that's very important to us. If you'd like to practice your Spanish, there will be plenty of opportunities for that too. Not only with us, but also when going into town or meeting people around San Agustín. Nothing formal really, just speaking together during normal everyday life. And don't worry about making mistakes, we make them too!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You can choose between staying in one of our little bungalows, setting up your own tent or sleeping in a hammock somewhere on the finca.

The bungalows are still pretty basic and actually not completely finished yet. We're planning to add a private toilet soon, but for now they're more like simple shelters with a roof and some privacy. So please don't expect a hotel room :) If you enjoy being outdoors and don't mind a bit of rustic living, you should feel quite comfortable here.

There are shared toilets and showers on the property, a kitchen where you can cook and some covered areas to sit, eat or just relax.

We're still improving things step by step, and you'll probably notice that there's always something we're working on!

About food: As a family, we normally have two main meals a day, and you're very welcome to join us. We really enjoy sharing meals, and sometimes it's also nice to cook something together, maybe even try a recipe from your country!

Of course, we know that not everyone eats at the same times. We'll provide enough food and ingredients for three meals a day, including snacks, and you can always use the kitchen to prepare something yourself.

We'd like you to feel at home here, rather than having to follow our family routine all the time.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our finca is about 5 minutes by car from the town centre (20 minutes walking), so we're close enough to go into town but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. There are many nice things to do around here. You can visit the archaeological sites, go hiking, see waterfalls, explore the Magdalena River area or simply spend an afternoon in town having a coffee.

We both know the region quite well (I am working for a local tourism agency) and are always happy to give you some recommendations. I can probably help you with a few travel tips if you're planning to explore more of Colombia afterwards.

The finca is a nice place to relax on your days off too. You can read, spend time outside, cook something or just enjoy doing nothing for a while.

Since we have two small daughters, our family life can sometimes be a little chaotic, but generally we're pretty relaxed. We enjoy having people around, although we also appreciate everyone having their own space.

We'd prefer Workawayers who can stay for at least two weeks, as it takes a little time to get to know each other and settle in.

If you have any questions about the place or what life here is like, just send us a message. We're happy to tell you more!

We have Wi-Fi at the finca, mainly around our house and the nearby common areas. The signal might not reach every corner of the property. If you work online, you're welcome to use the connection during your free time. Just keep in mind that we're in the countryside, so it's probably not the best place if you need a perfect internet connection all day for video calls (I am working online myself - a lot in home office and it works!!). If you're unsure whether it would work for your job, just ask us before coming.

    Space for parking camper vans

We have some space on the property for campervans and cars, and we'd be happy to welcome you if you're travelling with your own vehicle. Our entrance and some parts of the land might be a bit tricky for bigger vehicles, though. So if you have a large camper, please send us a picture or the dimensions beforehand and we'll check if it fits.

    Can possibly accept pets

Possibly yes! We like animals and have some around the property, but we'd prefer to talk about it beforehand (there's a lot of chicken and dogs of the neighbours around). If you're travelling with a pet, just let us know what kind of animal you have and a little bit about it. Since we have two small children, it's important for us that everyone feels safe and comfortable.
