    Description

I am a single, retired gentleman, 72 years old, residing in Belize, looking for someone to help with cooking and gardening. I enjoy baking but do not enjoy cooking. Therefore, I am looking for someone who wants room and board in an English and Spanish-speaking environment. The new house has a beautiful guest room and a large kitchen.

A 1/4 acre garden lot next door to the house needs maintenance regularly, and two raised gardens with more planned. The right person will want to help with these gardens and learn from and teach about gardening.

Belize is a beautiful Central American country, formerly British Honduras. English is the official language, but the opportunity to learn/speak Spanish exists. Our community is deeply involved with the local, native community of Santa Familia. There are plenty of great cultural and natural sites to visit and enjoy. Being an hour and a half from the Caribbean Sea, beaches are within travel distance.

While not a beach community, good outdoor activity on the water and hiking are plentiful here in the Cayo District.

Belize is a wonderful country with great Mayan ruins and excavations in the country. Further, the dual language nature of the country allows for great cultural exchange with the local residents. There is also a large Mennonite community within a short ride from my house. As part of my community there is a great opportunity for kayaking and river sports.

I love baking but do not like cooking. I need someone who likes to cook good meals and teach me how to cook them as well, and I will need help maintaining the garden lot, which will entail helping water and pruning trees and bushes, and cutting lawns. Planning and maintaining vegetable gardens will also be needed.

I am not a quick learner of foreign languages but I would like to learn Spanish for use here and Russian/Ukrainian for use with ex-pats from Ukraine.

The workawayer will have her own room, also shared as an office. There is Internet access in the room and house. The house is large, approximately 3200 square feet, raised ten feet above the ground. The kitchen, as I have indicated, has large counter space, a good range, a refrigerator as well as a separate freezer

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Visiting Mayan ruins, ziplining, cave rafting, and river rafting are some of the favorite pastimes of new people in Belize. I also participate in weekly luncheons that include playing Darts, which would be available to any workaway. Public buses are an experience not to be missed.
Carmelita Gardens, our community, is an off-the-grid community. The lifestyle in our community is laid back and friendly. My house is solar-powered, and we get our water from the skies. We have a self-contained community garden, which we are working on making a self-sufficient garden for the community. I am expecting my garden to be able to supply my vegetable needs in the next few years.
The weather here can be warm and humid for seven or eight months and rainy during the rest of the year. We tend to live in shorts, T-shirts, and sandals.
I have a scooter and a truck, which may be available for use by the workawayer with a valid driver's license.
