Description
We're Lucas and Annamaria. We live on an old 18th century farm with our newborn - together with our dog Pinga and our chickens.
The Quinta is a historic Portuguese farm, 35 minutes north of Lisbon. It used to make olive oil, wine, grow fruit and vegetables.
We're located in a wine region between the Tejo and the Atlantic. It's very rural, but we have friends to stay and very much enjoy cooking and making music in the evening.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
This is an old farm, with many ancient features and buildings that were used back in the day. It's still quite an old-school farming community around here, and yet, only 35mins from Lisbon airport. I like to think it's an exciting mix of the old and new.
We hope you will:
- be interested in the history, wine, cuisine and produce of this region (Alenquer)
- curious about old and ancient farming techniques. So much on the farm is still a mystery so curious minds are appreciated
- try to learn some Portuguese. It's a difficult language but fun to master!
- enjoy music. We both have a background in music and sometimes host concerts or festivals
- Lisbon is a 35min drive away. As you might have heard, it is a pretty, vibrant capital, offering great food and music, museums, nightlife...
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.

Help
The help is as varies as the farm is old, and depends a lot on the season. We might need your help with the following:
Garden/Farm:
- Set up and maintain a permaculture garden
- Prune olive and fruit trees
- Clear brambles and ivy off walls and trees
- Firewood and tree management
- Feed the sheep and chickens; build houses for other animals that we're getting soon
- Harvest - depending on the season, this might be vegetables, fruit trees (apricots, plums, figs, apples), elderflower, olives, citrus.
- Maintaining fences
Household:
- Transforming and preserving farm produce (pickling, fermenting, salting, canning)
- Cooking and preparing meals - hopefully using our own produce
- Cleaning, inevitably, will also be a part of life on the farm
And much more beyond!
**Volunteers will not be expected to work in any profit-making activities**

Accommodation
You'd stay in the house
- Sleeping: you will have your own bedroom in the main house, an 18th Century farm house
- Bathroom: there is only one bathroom to share with other workaway people or friends staying
- Cooking/Diet: We tend to have meals together. Help with cooking is always appreciated!
- Wine: This is a wine region and we love wine!
What else ...
- Transport: Local busses are sporadic and infrequent, but we can easily drive you to Carregado or Vila Franca de Xira, from where you can get a train to Lisbon (costs ca. 3-4EUR), or to the seaside (Ericeira or Santa Cruz)
- You may have use of Lucas' old Polo (tbc)
- Time off is flexible
