Description
We are a family living in the interior of British Columbia about 45 min drive west of Kamloops. Our children currently range in age from 15 to 19 years old. Mom (Becky) is a school bus driver and works part time. Dad (Rod) works away but is usually home on weekends. We have 4 horses. Our children are active in hockey and rodeo. We live in the country far away from stores. We have 4 dogs, 2 goats, 3 outdoor cats and sometimes a couple cows and a garden. We live on a first nations reservation and can offer to teach First Nations culture!

We live in a beautiful valley called Deadman Creek. We have many lakes and the third biggest waterfall in BC in our valley. We have horses and a large organic garden. We eat a lot of good healthy organic food. We travel around BC a lot taking the kids to their sports. We are riding horses a lot! First Nations culture :) We don't have a public transportation system here but we go to town often and there is always lots of space if you want to join :-)

I stayed with Becky and her family for about two weeks; she was my first Workaway host, and I was a little bit nervous as I waited at the bus stop in Kamloops 😅. But this apprehension disappeared when I met Becky. She was highly friendly and welcoming, and I quickly felt like a member of the family. My bedroom was spacious and comfortable, like… read more the rest of the house in fact 😁. If you like the rodeo style, as I do, this is the place to be; the decor is fantastic🤠. There are many animals living here, including three adorable dogs (and some lovely puppies remaining), a calf (that I had to feed from a bottle), two goats, and two horses with a funny foal.
The small farm was beautiful, and feeding and spending time with the animals in the morning was my favourite task. The house is almost in the middle of nowhere, and the surrounding area is simply stunning. I had never seen this landscape before. There was no need to be in the middle of a city to get distracted; simply walking with the dogs behind the house and playing with the foal and puppies was enough to make life enjoyable here. I had the opportunity to meet her husband, Rod, on the first weekend; he was kind enough to come and get me from the house just to take me to the junior rodeo, where their last son was competing. I had already experienced a similar event in the past, I was excited to discover the rodeo backstage and the organization (a lot of work!!) with them. They did a lot of effort to allow me to be present on this day 🥲.
I assisted Becky with housework, including preparing meals for multiple occasions and many people! 😉 I enjoy cooking and the challenge, so I had a lot of fun helping her with this task. That allowed me to meet a lot of new people (including her family and friends). I had an incredible chance to meet her funny brother, and his lovely family, as well as her wonderful parents. I helped her father in his organic garden and at the market in Kamloops; it was my first time and I guess that was one of my best experience. Her father is an incredible person with an amazing story. I only met a small portion of the family, but they are extremely generous and have a strong sense of unity; this is an exceptional family model. Becky is a lovely person with a big heart who gives generously to everyone and the community around her. She is a brave, hard worker who cares about your well-being. I had the opportunity to ride her horse a few times. I used to ride a lot in the past...so now thanks to her I want to ride again 😂 I also met and visited many Becky's friends, she took me to the restaurant and theatre with them, I was really included everywhere like a real member of the family 😁
I probably missed many things, But I wish them to be happy in the future and have everything they want.
This house and this family will miss me, as well as dogs (the last puppy 😭) horses, cats....
I hope I will get some news of them in the future 🥰

I was so nervous as I sat on the bus on the way to my first WorkAway, not knowing what to expect. It turned out being one of the best decision I have ever made. I stayed with Becky and her family for just over 2 months and truly found a second home during my time here. Becky welcomed me with open arms from the moment I arrived and I felt so… read more comfortable and at ease as soon as I stepped into the car at the Greyhound station. Becky is such a kind-hearted, funny and genuine person who treats you like part of the family.
While I was at Becky’s we went to more Rodeos than I can count, and it was really amazing to see the kids compete and was always such a fun weekend away. We also went camping down by the lake for a weekend which was so beautiful! I learnt so much about and was exposed to great deal of First Nations culture, and it was such an interesting experience living on an Indian reservation. The work varied a lot in nature which was nice as it kept everything interesting and refreshing. It was very minimal and simple from odd jobs like weeding and gardening, helping out at Paula and Mendel’s (her parents) organic market garden or their stall at the local farmers market, getting the truck and trailer ready for Rodeos, tidying around the house, helping with catering and (my favourite part) look after the kids, which doesn’t really feel like work at all! I had such a great time looking after them and seeing them grow and change in this short space of time. While I was there I had the pleasure of meeting Becky’s daughter and her little boy visiting form the US and all of Becky’s family. I will miss Paula’s delicious and wholesome lunches after a morning helping in their garden, the newborn kitten, the gorgeous sunsets, camping out at the Rodeos, floating down the creek by the house all day, the America’s Got Talent re-enactments by the kids in the living room and the beautiful welcoming nature of the family. You will fall in love with the horses (Beau, Trace and Smarty), the cats (Lucky, Speck, Claire and her little baby), the dogs (Snip and Scarlett), and most importantly the kids. They are the funniest and kindest kids you could ever be lucky enough to help look after. I know I’ll be back to visit and can honestly say I have a home away from home in this beautiful part of BC. See you guys soon!
