Description
House is built, gardens established. Then what? Well, somehow there is always a to-do list as long as your arm. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful house in an unspoilt valley and bird sanctuary which is part of Waiheke's ecovillage. We are a family of 2 adults 3 kids (10, 16 , 18) transplanted from Italy. We've done a fair bit of travelling and workaway ourselves before settling down here and the travel bug may bite again at some point. But for now we are here and homeschooiling, eating from the garden etc. The community is loosely woven and we get together for working bees once a month. There's plenty of weed control to do in the bush and you'll get good at identifying invasive plant species. There's a milking cow and chickens but not many farm animals, most people do their own thing and you may have the opportunity to get to know different parts of the community as volunteers are sometimes lent and borrowed (!) We also run an Italian pizzeria and gelateria on the island so you'll never be short of good things to eat.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We love hosting people from around the world as it's the next best thing to travelling. We all benefit from having our horizions widened and our ideas challenged

Help
We'd love to find an independent-minded and practical person to be part of our projects. If you have carpentry skills we have a caravan waiting to be renovated, if you're into gardening and seed saving there's always plenty to do. And of course a good cook has friends everywhere. Let us know where your passions lie and we'll find a match.

'Turangawaewae' means 'a place to be on the earth' This is an earth house built by seven groups of hands with so much love and art that you can breathe it in. Fully independent accommodation (see photos)
What else ...
The bus doesn't come this far so you'll be reliant on lifts, a bicycle (hilly) or your own two feet to get to beaches and the rest of the island. If you really want to go to the city there's a ferry. But why would you want to do that?

Ale and Juli were really easy to be around. They helped out all over the place and things get a bit chaotic here sometimes!
They are independent workers, cheerful company, good with kids, farm work, photography, washing up...
It was a very rich exchange and we wish them all the best in their travels.
We spent beautiful days there that we will never forget. From seeing Asia receive us with flowers in her hands every morning, to enjoy the best breakfasts with sea views. Learn with Rossi in the laboratory how to make preserves, work in the garden with… read more
