Kia Ora! We’re Kaye and Scott - two former workawayers - now rooted in the north island of New Zealand on Auckland’s best kept subtropical secret - Kawau Island.
As a couple we manage the grounds, facilities, development, and daily operations of a newly-opened activity-based wellness retreat… and we’re looking for some help!
The retreat stretches across 50 acres of NZ native seaside-bush, with it’s own private dock, 3 boats, flourishing veggie gardens, 12 guest cabins, 4 alpacas, kayaks, paddleboards, a swimming pool, a private beach, endless scenic bush walks/hikes, and more…
Kawau is an easy 20 minute boat ride from the nearest beach town, Sandspit - which itself is an hour’s drive north of Auckland. The island is an idyllic semi-secluded summer spot with plenty of things to get up to in time-off, and a handful of social hubs dotted around the island (have a cold beer at the Kawau Boating Club, or a coffee at Mansion House cafe…).
As a couple we’re the only two permanent residents of the property; we encourage our visitors and workawayers to lean into the secluded peace. Wake up to the sound of native bird song and fall asleep to the sound of waves meeting the shore, and wind moving through a thousand native trees. We’re passionate about healthy and mindful living; our ultimate goal is for these 50 acres to become a wholly sustainable and flourishing mecca of wellness. We’re looking for like-minded and keen individuals to help push our project along to meet its full potential.

Life on our little slice of paradise gives you an awesome opportunity to reconnect with nature & discover new (or even rediscover old) parts of yourself along the way. Our 50 acres of native bush is home to well over 60 species of both native and exotic birds. Our private wharf floats above hundreds of playful and exotic fish and rays, occasionally beckoning pods of orcas and dolphins to the island. Learn gardening, fishing, yoga, or even just the simple art of being present in the moment. As it stands: however much heart you are willing to give this place, the heart of this place will certainly return the gesture.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
The help we’re looking for is mainly with general grounds maintenance (i.e. landscaping, gardening), occasional cleaning may be an option as well. Your day could consist of anything from weed trimming around the property, going for a hike to collect wood for the mulcher, developing a new walking path, tending to the gardens, or even simply packing tea bags and refilling shampoos for the retreats. There is no shortage of job variety (you’ll certainly never be bored)... but let us know if there’s something that you’re particularly keen on - we want you to enjoy your time here.
Gardening experience is not necessary, but is certainly a bonus; as with building / handyman experience.
We ask for 20 hours per week. In exchange, we can offer access to the facilities (exempting retreat periods when guests are on the premises), accommodation (see below), and foraging rights to our fruit and veggie gardens. There will be a fair stock of tins etc. in your pantry for you as well, but if you’re a big eater you might want to bring additional food and snacks to the island.
Each workawayer / couple has a private bedroom with a double bed in the workers’ quarters. Shared kitchen and bathroom facilities with other workawayers. The quarters are a short 3 minute stroll to the waterfront, complete with laundry facilities & an outdoor deck attached to the rooms.
You’re encouraged (not required) to take time off the estate when our 3-4 day retreats are in flow (we’re happy to offer adventure & logistical advice, and maybe even a ride to the mainland if we’re heading that way anyway). Auckland is about an hour south from Kawau; the Coromandel, Waiheke and Bay of Islands are also popular close-by destinations, but do your research and you will find there is plenty to see in the area.
Around the island you can enjoy a scenic hike or overnight camp. When retreats are not on, you are more than welcome to spend your time off using the facilities so long as you treat them with respect: jump on a kayak or paddle board and explore the island, play frisbee or volleyball on the waterfront, go for a swim in the pool, learn or practice archery, relax and detox in the sauna or outdoor baths, practice yoga on the bush enclosed platform… if you’re keen and able to bring a fair work ethic here with you, the opportunities for after-hours fun are truly endless.
