Description
Tiny Farm in Beautiful Southern Midlands, Tasmania
Hello! I'm Des, and I live on my small 3-acre farm in a peaceful rural hamlet in the Southern Midlands of Tasmania. Surrounded by rolling countryside, fresh air, and stunning skies (we sometimes see the Aurora Australis!), it's a quiet, restorative place to stay and contribute.I have two friendly dogs and two sheep as part of the farm family. My main focus right now is designing and building low-water vegetable gardens suited to Tasmania’s climate. There are also various small building, maintenance, and improvement projects around the property.
What I Offer:
Private tiny home-style accommodation (separate from the main house) with a queen bed — suitable for couples or solo travellers.
Shared bathroom and kitchen in the main house.
A calm rural base perfect for those who love nature and slow living.
Opportunity to use the property as a base for fruit-picking work in season (rates negotiable).
What You'll Be Helping With:
Garden work: preparing beds, building low-water systems, planting, mulching, and general maintenance.
Light building and maintenance tasks (fencing, painting, small repairs, etc.).
General farm chores — feeding animals, etc.
Household choores cleaning by agreement.
Help is needed about 3-4 hours per day, 5 days a week. I'm away in Hobart during weekdays for work, so most work happens in the mornings or late afternoons. Evenings and weekends are usually free.
Important Notes:
This is a small, hands-on property — not a large commercial farm.
Very rural location with no public transport. Your own vehicle is strongly preferred, but I commute to Hobart daily and can sometimes offer a lift if arranged in advance.
It's 60 km to Hobart CBD, 22 km north to Oatlands and 50 km to Hobart Airport.
Winters can be frosty/cold (occasional snow possible).
I Provide:
Private accommodation
Access to kitchen facilities (you prepare your own meals or we share)
No wi-fi yet, mobile phone reception is good with Telstra and Optus. Starlink is on my wishlist.
A welcoming, low-pressure environment
If you’re self-motivated, enjoy outdoor work, and would like to experience genuine Tasmanian rural life while helping create something sustainable, I’d love to hear from you. Couples are very welcome.
Looking forward to meeting positive, helpful volunteers who appreciate the peace and beauty of the Tasmanian countryside! -
