Description
Located in the centre of Oaxaca city we are a hostel and that has been lovingly built by hand into place for travellers from around the world to experience the culture and traditions of Oaxaca.
Oaxaca city is a city of revolution, where the local people are proud of their unique traditions, foods and identity. In the valleys around Oaxaca city you find the heart of the Mezcal industry both industrial producers and family producers.
To the north of the city we have Madre Tierra, the mountain ranges that run through the middle of mexico where we have trekking, mountain biking ziplines cabins and camping available.
Villages around the city specialise in a variety of artisan trades maintaining the indigenous traditions that existed before the Spanish arrival, textiles, wood carving, clay work and more.

Our space in Oaxaca has been built buy the community that have passed through our doors. The murals on our walls painted by people who have been inspired buy Oaxaca and the space we are in and have been given a place to express.
Oaxaca is a city where there is daily cultural activity from orchestras, to graffiti, handcraft markets to religious parades. We work to provide a place for our guests and volunteers to experience and participate in these events.
Dance, food, art and craft workshops are available in the hostel and in many of the other cultural spaces in Oaxaca city where it is possible to get immersed in the traditions and culture of Oaxaca.

Our volunteers are here to help our staff with their work.
Volunteers will be helping to help our guests, taking shifts at working in reception and providing guests with assistance, We have a slowly growing selection of plants and are working in water recycling projects in the hostel. we also have mescal introduction nights in the bar, salsa nights and multiple excuses for fiestas.
We are looking for people who enjoy and are interested in these things and can help us share them with our guests.

I worked here happily for about 5 weeks in reception. It's a very pleasant stay in a central, convenient, and safe location in the city that is eminently walkable to most points of interest in Centro. It's easy to spend as much time as you want here and flexibly extend your volunteering term, as the atmosphere is friendly, relaxed, and there are… read more places of refuge/privacy when desired.

The work is very simple and consists mostly of checking people in and out (with very minimal cleaning). There are 4 volunteers for reception that work one at a time on a rolling schedule, so you regularly get what amounts to a 2.5 day weekend after every shift. You work essentially 2-3 days a week, and can do other things for the majority of the day so long as you expect to be interrupted frequently and must remain at the hostel for a solid 24 hours.

Accommodations are in a four-bed volunteer dorm with an extra floating space (for the bartender or newest volunteer) in the main dorms. There are devoted staff for cooking (breakfast) and doing the majority of the cleaning and even changing of beds. The cook/s, cleaner, and night guards really only speak Spanish, so it helps to know a bit, but they're used to volunteers (myself included) who knew very little and make do regardless. The manager/owner are nearly constantly reachable via whatsapp and are generally hands-off. Nothing is overly complicated and the place nearly runs itself in many respects - with the help of whichever volunteer has stayed there the longest. Breakfast is good and served every day with coffee, and the kitchen is large, well-stocked with utensils, conveniently located near reception, and a welcoming/comfortable common space with a lot of room. Water pressure in the showers is pretty bad, I'll say that.

The space is well-maintained, interesting, comfortable, functional, inviting, and actually fairly expansive. Especially on the roof, there are places to go for work and privacy as well as socialization with the larger group or more private hang-outs to the side. The hostel attracts a majority of english-speaking western europeans, from a variety of countries (Scandinavian, French, English, Dutch, etc). People were always friendly and relaxed, and there are regular events that are well-attended but relaxed and skippable. As a volunteer, you're meant to host one event a week (in addition to your shifts), but these can be low-effort (chess tournament, art/church walk, beer pong, etc). It's not a party or a sex hostel by any stretch and there were no thefts (zero incidences of any of this). The quiet hours are from 11pm-7am.
