    Description

Hi! I've been grateful to have workaway cultural exchange helpers from all walks of life since 2012. All of them have been wonderful and loved it here as much as I've loved having their help.. Please feel free to contact me and let me know if this looks like something you'd like. I have workawayers here for cultural exchange almost year round and sometimes there's room for more.

My name is Leo and I'm the owner of the ranch. I give educational buffalo tours everyday in summer and also do winter survival courses and other events in winter, but my usual busy season is May thru October. People come here from all over the world happy and amazed about Canada, the mountains and the buffalo. I'm grateful to meet them. I almost always have more helpers than I need so that nobody has too much work to do. You help me with cleaning and cooking, shopping, fire wood, moving hay, painting signs and sometimes we paint a room in the house. Mostly it's just keeping the ranch and house looking nice and doing the basic chores with me.

Here is a bit about this beautiful place:

We are located in the beautiful Blaeberry Valley, 15 minutes north of Golden, British Columbia. 1 hour from Lake Louise, 1.5 hours from Banff, 3 hours west of Calgary, Alberta.

On the Ranch you will find meadows, wetlands, and forest with 360 degree mountain and glacier views. Enjoy the roaming buffalo, year round creeks and ponds with native fish, and pristine frontage along the Blaeberry River, fed by the Mummery Glacier. We are surrounded by amazing vistas of the Canadian Rockies and the Purcell Mountains. Wildlife, such as elk, moose, wolves, bears, puma, fox, osprey, bald eagles, black and grizzly bears and many other species of birds and native fish pass through this land. It is truly a spectacular place! ( in 18 years I've never had a problem with the grizzlies, they're very smart and they already know we're here )

I am working hard on my second book and music and business, so I tend to spend early mornings and evenings on my own, I go to bed early and get up early. Helpers have to be able to cook for themselves and entertain themselves and be okay on their own, but there's almost always more than one helper at a time, and I love to get to know you guys. It's a gift for me to have you here and it warms my heart too. Lots of times we eat dinner together and I have made lasting close friendships with my helpers I cherish. I make sure to show and teach and share things with all my helpers, but I do love my quiet alone time to be creative, so you do have to be able to be on your own if you're the only helper here at the time, but lately there's almost always two or three helpers at a time. One day I hope I'll find someone and get married again, but for now my main comfort is my creative work. If you're interested in being creative, writing songs or books, singing live, playing the guitar, or in the creative process in general, I try to make time to share about what I've learned about it and we usually have a little party about once a week or so. If you're interested in buffalo or surviving alone in the wilderness, I've done that since I was sixteen, and experienced miracles. That's a lot of what I write about. So that's some stuff about me. I look forward to getting to know more about you! :) Thanks for helping me and the buffalo, I really appreciate your friendship and support.

You will learn first hand what life is like living in Canada with buffalo. I'm the only one that can go in the pastures with the buffalo (bison) though. They stay wild and will charge strangers! Sharing the life, bison, and culture is what I do on the buffalo tours every day through the summer, sometimes you can help me with that. I love it here. Every helper I've had has loved it here too, and I appreciate your help very much. You will meet my local friends, the best friends I could ever ask for. You will become part of my ranch 'family' and depending on your age and desires and your 'vision' if you've received yours yet, you might find more than you ever dreamed of. A lot of people have here. I am grateful for every minute here and for you.

    Help

Help required on the ranch varies, as much as possible it can vary dependent on what you like to do! I want to make sure you are having a good time while you're here :)

There's also lots of help do be done on the property itself - There's weeding and gardening, stacking and storing wood, shoveling snow, etc. It's a large property so there is always something to help with.

I used to have only one helper at a time and still do sometimes, but I'm tending toward couples now, and sometimes I accommodate four and even six helpers at a time June through September.

In exchange for 5 hours of help a day, There is loft with an amazing view up the valley and a half kitchen and a bathroom. We share the bathroom and kitchen, but it's private and cozy up in the loft. There is another private loft upstairs in the shop. We have two nice campers one 24 ft and one 16 ft that helpers stay in until the weather gets too cold. In winter there is usually Just one extra helper, sometimes two, and me.

There's also an outhouse with a great view :)

We provide you with food. -For the most part you are free to prepare your own meals and eat when you wish to. Often I have helpers that like to cook, and they'll cook dinner and we eat together, I enjoy that very much. Otherwise I usually make something for myself kind of quickly and get back to work.

    What else ...

Golden is a very friendly country town, and there's lots of sightseeing to do as well! Golden is home to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, which has a variety of hiking trails, mountain biking trails, and a gondola to the top for a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains around you! There's also Boo the Grizzly Bear who has his own sanctuary on the mountain. :)

Golden also has a variety of activities as well - everything from whitewater rafting down the famous Kicking Horse River, paragliding from the top of Mount 7, mountain biking and hiking trails around the entire area, horseback riding, even skydiving is available if you're a huge thrill seeker!

The ranch is located in the beautiful Blaeberry Valley, 10 minutes north of Golden, British Columbia. 1 hour from Lake Louise, 1.5 hours from Banff, 3 hours west of Calgary, Alberta. Our closest international airport is Calgary International. The drive between Calgary and Golden through the Rocky Mountains is one of the most beautiful in the world. Golden is called “the heart of the parks” as it is surrounded by 9 National and Provincial Parks!

My friend Carolyn spent a Christmas and winter with me I'll never forget and she took amazing winter pictures.
my cabin, everyone's stars :)
Chester Jr, when he was 4 years old. He'll be full grown at 10. He already weighs almost a ton and I think he's going to get even bigger than his dad. I love him like an angel.
Canadian's like big chainsaws!! hahahah :) staying fit, wilderness survival and the Native hunter gatherer diet has been a beautiful part of my life and if you'd like to learn more about it as part of your stay here you can ask me about that.
Teaching wonderful local school kids about making fire the way the Native People did with a bow drill.
pond wonderful for swimming buffalo and people not at the same time though!
I love winter, I love it love it love it! it's quiet, and I can go inside, and the fire's going, and write books and stories and songs. I've been more creative here than anywhere in my life.
Chester Senior in his prime, about 2,700 lbs.
Shepherd's wagon, looking north
Buffalo running in video/song for Chester. He was getting old and lost about 1,000 lbs. I knew I would have to put him down one day, one of the hardest things I've ever done.
This is the Blaeberry river frontage on the ranch. It's so wild and beautiful down here.
Buffalo (bison latin name) cow and calf.
It took seven years before my late bull, Chester would let me get close to him. I breathed his last breath when he died and finally accepted the strength he tried to give me in dreams.
