    Description

Hey workawayers! We are a family of three, myself David (36), my wife Amy (34) and our wee man Oisín (2) living right on the wild Atlantic way in Connemara. We returned to Ireland last year after a ten year hiatus working / travelling overseas. We fell in love (again!) with this rugged part of the world and wanted a piece of it. We purchased a renovated 1940’s cottage with a bit of land and it’s been our project ever since. We are bounded by the Atlantic with the Aran Islands looking right at us (you can also see the famous cliffs of Moher from here) and behind us we have wonderful views of the Maumturk mountains. Raising the little man has taken precedence over all the jobs around the house, so we are looking towards you workawayers for a helping hand / creativity. PS our profile is a work in progress - more photos / info to follow! Any questions you might have, don't hesitate to get in touch!

If you want to throw yourself into Irish culture there really is no better place. This is a very unique part of Ireland. The Irish language (Gaeilge) is cherished here and it is one of the last strongholds of native speakers (known as Gaeltacht regions). Myself and Amy aren’t fluent but most people in this area are (don't worry everybody speaks English too). We are learning all the time about the cultural heritage of this region so we can all learn together. We love to attend local traditional Irish music sessions (my sisters are also both Irish musicians) and we would love to take you with us. There is a thatched roof pub around the corner from us. This is our favourite place to sit of an evening and chat with the locals over the turf fire. Movies have been filmed around here. It’s a place of poets and storytellers. Whether you workaway with us or not you need to visit this place!

We are looking for help with renovating / improving our home and land. There are a million and one things we need done and we simply don’t have the time. We both work full time, I work in Oncology and Amy is a pharmacist. If you are a DIY enthusiast or love pottering around outdoors then we’d love to hear from you! We will work with your skill set / interests. We are also looking for someone who is happy to spend time with our wee man. This is very important to us. He is turning two soon and is a bundle of energy and “craic” as we say in Ireland. Good English is essential so we can all communicate effectively and have a bit of fun.

    Accommodation

You will get the best room in the house with access to your own private bathroom. It’s located on the ground floor while we’ll be in the bedroom upstairs. You’ll have access to every area in the house and we want you to feel right at home and part of our little family - that’s important to us. Myself and Amy take it in turns with the menu and cooking. We will spoil you with good food (and wine), don’t worry! And if you’d like to cook sometime / all the time whatever you like, you are more than welcome to. We are pretty flexible in that regard and of course we can accomodate any dietary requests. Myself and Amy will be working most days (bar weekends) so for the most part you will have the house all to yourself during the day.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There is so much to do around here. Beach walks / foraging just a short walk from our doorstep, cycling is very popular around here, kayaking, horse riding, fishing to name but a few activities. The Connemara National Park has some beautiful hikes to choose from (we can give you maps / guidebooks / all the gear). The award winning POTA cafe is a 20 min walk from our house. If you want to go further afield the bus stop is just a short walk down the road but in this part of Ireland (especially if it is raining) all you need to do is wave one down outside our house! Galway city is about an hour by bus (much quicker by car of course). It's a very good service that runs quite regularly. And I don’t need to tell you how amazing Galway city is. The main ferry terminal to the Aran islands in Rossaveal is only down the road from us. You can’t stay in Connemara without going island hopping! We are also the perfect base for day trips around the region. Roundstone, Cliften (the famous Sky Road), Cleggan, Inagh Valley (google it), Kylemore Abbey the list goes on and on. And whenever we go away somewhere at the weekends for a bit of adventure or just a pint of Guinness we invite you to join us! We want you to have fun during your time here.
