Description
Hello Workawayers, my name is Faith. I'm 35 years old from Nairobi, Kenya. I run a non-profit foundation that seeks to empower vulnerable children, youth and women within the informal settlements of Nairobi through capacity building, advocacy, and outreach programs. The Foundation's thematic areas are climate action / environmental conservation, heath and wellbeing, education, and economic empowerment.
On environmental conservation, we have a Tree Planting campaign through which we partner with schools, churches, community leaders and local government administration to clean up open spaces and plant trees in those spaces, with the sole purpose of greening Nairobi and mitigating the impacts of climate change. So far we have planted more than 5,000 seedlings in schools, community playgrounds, and along river banks. We also help schools to set up and manage nurseries for assorted trees in order to supply seedlings to women and youth groups who wish to plant in their spaces. We also plan to do capacity building for youth and women groups on climate change and the roles they can play to mitigate its impacts while building their adaptive capabilities. Also exploring ways in which we can support youth and women groups to venture into green jobs such as recycling waste into sellable items.
On health and wellbeing, we run a sexual and reproductive heath rights (SRHR) advocacy and outreach program through which we also donate sanitary pads to needy and vulnerable school growing girls.
Also, we work with other partners with whom we donate lunch and basic foodstuffs to needy and less privileged families in Nairobi's informal settlements through our Humanitarian Project.
On education, we run a career mentorship program in academic institutions. We also have many bright but needy students who need our support with fees and shopping and we are looking at ways of mobilising resources to help to help them financially.
I am the managing director of the foundation. The foundation is still in it's formative but has picked momentum. We have constructed a small temporary office, situated in government offices at Makadara Sub-County deputy county commissioner's compound. Currently we sit on the Sub-County disaster management committee. I'm happy that there's goodwill from local government and businesses which have been supporting our initiatives.
I'm looking for help from volunteers with demonstrable experience in:
- Fundraising
- Resource mobilization/ Proposal writing
- Documentation/Report writing
- Project management
- Social media management
- Photography/ Video coverage

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
First, you will engage in a genuine cultural exchange by interacting with local communities, our volunteers, and partners, sharing experiences, and learning about the way of life of Nairobians, particularly in informal settlements.
Second, we will treat you to all authentic Kenyan foods, and I believe it will be worthy your visit. You will also have a chance to share with us your cuisines and recipes, that's if you love to cook.
Third, you'll get an opportunity to actively participate in community outreach programs, witnessing the resilience and unity of the communities we serve.
Fourth, you will have a chance to explore Nairobi and its environs with a tour to the city landmarks, parks, music and dance, local markets and crafts, and other areas of your interest.
We are flexible enough and we believe that we will enjoy each other's company and learn from each other in lots of ways.
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.

Help
I'm looking for a volunteer who can support my foundation in areas of project management, fundraising, grant writing, proposal writing, or communications (photography, website development, graphic design, brand development, social media visibility, and content creation), or any other skill that may be relevant to the growth of our foundation. You'll also get a chance to volunteer in the community, interact with locals and our partners, and touch lives through our food donations, tree planting exercises, sanitary pads donations, career mentorship program and other initiatives. We are ready to share our local experiences with you as we learn some insights from you on how best to run our organization.

Accommodation
We provide meals and accommodation. We stay in Makadara (Buruburu Phase 3) in Nairobi, a middle class setup, in own compound and our home is not so big but has an extra room to accommodate one to two volunteers. Wifi is available throughout. We have 3 daughters (13 years, 2 years and 3 months) so we hope to find someone who loves children. Won't expect you to smoke in the house, or engage in any misconduct that exposes the children to any kind of danger. I also expect the volunteer to act respectfully with me and my family.
During your visit, we will offer you our local delicacies at home, we will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will experience a real feel of Kenyan authentic foods including goat meat, kuku kienyeji (indigenous chicken), fish, local vegetables, fruits, Ugali, and rice among other foods. Also, during our weekly feeding program, you'll get a chance to interact with locals in Nairobi slums and get to share meals with them as you experience our authentic way of life. You'll also get a chance to walk around in local food joints to have a feel and compare the cultural difference from your own country.
And if cooking is your thing, we'd love to have a feel of your cooking!
We do not charge any cost but would appreciate any support you can offer with the cost of food, room cleaning, laundry, and fuel for transport to and from work or your other errands.
What else ...
We have a car, and can drive you around to tour Nairobi and its environs at your cost, but when we are engaged, you can easily access town or your places of choice through public transport or uber / bolt. But our schedules are not so tight, so we can create sometime to take you around.
