WHO ARE WE?
We are the a non-profit organization located in San Jerónimo de Desamparados (Costa Rica).
Our organization promote the participation of people with disabilities in the social, cultural, sports and work environment (now most of the activities are virtual). Also, we encourage the participation of people without disabilities to create a non-discrimination environment. We are doing this in the city of Desamparados and in the rest of Costa Rica.
Our vision is to achieve an inclusive society in Desamparados and extend the project to other regions in the rest of the country.
If you like dancing, there is also a change to participate in the Ya! Danza group. It is a group of dancers with and without disabilities, who loved to dance contemporary dance.
The Founder Lucho is leader, dancer and he works promoting differents inclusive spaces, now because pandemic (most are virtual) however you will have the option to do tourism or help other organizations (we can refereal you)
WHERE WILL YOU STAY?
Desamparados, San José.
The organization will pick you up from the airport or an other place in the area of San José to the volunteer’s house (FREE COST).
AIRPORT: We recommend you to book your flight directly to JUAN SANTAMARÍA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (SJO) which is about 30 mins away.
BUS STATION: If you are already in Costa Rica, you can take the bus from almost anywhere in the country to SAN JOSÉ city.
LOCAL TRANSPORT:
In Desamparados we have buses to San José city, which is 10-15 minutes away. It costs US$0.5. The bus stop is only 5 minutes walk from the volunteers house.
We also have Uber and taxi here, the price to San José city is around US$5 for a 15 minutes drive.
But the family have a car as well, they can bring you also to the places in the neighbourhood!Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
During the volunteering period, you will stay with a Costa Rican family. There are always a lot of people at home. During the weekends, they often invite family or friends for dinner. You will be totally part of the family, so it is a great experience to learn about the Costa Rican culture! :)
Language:
There are some family members who can speak English, but most of them they only speak Spanish. So it’s a great chance for you to learn the Tico Spanish!
Trips:
Costa Rica is famous of the volcanos, waterfalls and tropical animals!
We often hang out on weekends, going on day trips to volcano, nature sight seeing or playing board games at home with the family! So there will be also enough time to discover the surroundings here!Help

Room:
You will have your own room with a single bed, desk, chair, closet and free wifi which let you work super easily. If you want, there is also a TV which you can use.
The room is bright and spacious, you can enjoy nature light in the morning and there's enough space for you to do yoga or any other exercise if you want!
Shared Space:
We have a shared bathroom with hot water. If you want to cook or to bake something, feel free to use the kitchen.
Local Food:
If you want, you can enjoy every day the delicious traditional Costa Rican food. For example: Gallo Pinto, Olla de carne, Casado, Sopa Azteca, etc.
But if you want to make something for yourself, is that also totally fine! There are always a lot of veggies and fruit available at the house.
In Costa Rica we drink a lot of coffee, coffee is available at home anytime! Just as tea for sure, if you don't like coffee.
*If you have any special diet such as vegetarian, vegan or any allergic to food, feel free to let us know.

There are options to do it by yourself.
Fees:
We do grocery shopping two times a month, feel free to help contribute to the grocery.What else ...
There’s a shopping mall only 3 mins walk from volunteer’s house, you can get phone service, fast food (Mc Donal’s, Taco Bell, etc.) and also there’re banks, clothes shops, grocery stores, pharmacys, bookstores and more!
The bus station is also next to the mall which bring you to San José city.
We have 3 families / houses available, they will more than glad to be your hosters.A little more information

He and his organization doing incredible work to integrate people with disabilities into daily life. I have learned so much from him during my stay. I had a possibility to be creative and free to share my ideas.
Personally he is one of the biggest motivator in life!!
