Description
We are a non profit organization in Dehradun, India, working everyday to empower women and girls in the area since 2013. Our work aims to educate and financially liberate women and girls from the confines of traditional gender roles that unfortunately can at times keep women and their children stuck in unsafe and unfair living conditions. The saheli foundation values independence, community building, education, self expression and environmentalism. Aside from our shelter we are running several other projects, i fabric, she cab, and the leafy story, as well as community outreach, you can find more information about these projects here-ask us for the link

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Living with us is a great way to experience true authentic life in India. Learn some Hindi, learn to cook, learn to dance, overall you will learn about the way people live in rural India. Spend quality time with some amazing young women and learn from each other along the way! Also, we are in Dehradun which is very near the major tourist attractions of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussorie. Bungee jumping ( the highest in India), parasailing, white water rafting are all nearby activities.
Help
We are looking for volunteers to help us keep up with the many projects we are juggling. We need help creating media content and expanding our outreach to obtain more donations to keep our charitable work a reality. Any experience with managing social media and building websites is a huge plus! We are also looking for experienced English speakers and teachers to help our girls and our community communicate more effectively in English, as it is the most widely used language of our modern age. We are also looking for anyone with a passion related to health and Well-being as we are interested in working more with our community to educate about women specific health issues. Finally any experience in advertising and eco marketing is a great virtue we are seeking. However, we are happily accepting any volunteers that love children and want to spend their time creating fun and engaging lessons and activities for the girls. We are looking for self motivated individuals that can help where they see fit, as we are often busy in the field and don’t have much time to direct you. Mainly, duties consist of spending quality time with the kids, teaching and helping with school work, going out in the field with us, helping us create a stronger online presence, helping us sell our cutlery from the leafy story, and helping at the school when necessary.

The residence currently houses 4 girls and their caretaker, Kieran, there is a boy that lives down the street at the school as well that comes for all family meals. Often more women and girls stay with us for short stints while we help to get them on their feet and find more sustainable living options. The house is also where we do all of our office work from. The room will be shared by two volunteers and there is an attached bathroom. Dining is with the children and women of the Residence and food is Indian and only vegetarian.
What else ...
Since the location of the shelter is in a rural area, it is advisable to be dressed appropriately. Volunteers are expected to be back in the Shelter, after an outing, latest by 10.00 pm.
The months of May and June are hot, it rains during the months of July, August and September when the monsoons are there and winter rains are there in December and January. Rest of the year is pleasant.
