The commune-based NGOs were born due to the need for social mediation, sanitary solutions and environmental sustainability in Las Colonias, a suburb on the outskirts of the city of Pereira. The residents did not have any kind of support nor protection from the government or public entities. Little by little, we gained the trust of the community’s residents with our transformative processes and a cooperative philosophy without political, religious or racial ideology. Since then, we have organized all kinds of campaigns to improve the quality of life in the community with the goal to empower its members towards self-sufficiency. The projects are financed by small donations from different sources, as well as communitarian events like environmental and cultural festivals, recycling and flea markets, among others. Our aim is to make the invisible part of Colombia known to various types of travellers.

The travelers will learn about the “invisible Colombia” and the consequences of the civil war. This is an incredible opportunity to get to know a genuine and culturally diverse place. LAS COLONIAS makes up part of the Esperanza-Galicia suburb on the outskirts of the city of Pereira which is the capital of the coffee growing region. This settlement was formed 20 years ago by internal displaced people of all ethnicities from all over the country. According to the last census, there are 140 homes and around 600 people from diverse regions of the country, with afrocolombian, indigenous and mestizo ethnic groups.
Las Colonias is close to many charming towns and beautiful natural parks. There is lots of opportunities to enjoy weekends away exploring all the region has to offer.

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
