  A humanitarian and social NGO. Founded in the 1950s in France by Abbé Pierre, the organisation has since then grown and developed around the world: today, there are 400 communities spread on four continents. Each of them has structured its activity around the needs of the local civil society: recycling, upcycling, agricultural cooperatives, crafts, training, microcredit.
  
  At Caneças, on the outskirts of Lisbon, the community settled in the 1980s has between 15 and 20 permanent companions. Each companion is provided with food and accommodation and becomes an agent of solidarity through collection, recycling and catering activities.
  
  The community's activities revolve around restoring and selling donated material. The community aims to ensure food self-sufficiency: daily tasks also include tending to the vegetable garden and taking care of the animals.

  Emmaüs est une ONG à visée humanitaire et sociale. Fondée dans les années 50 en France par l’abbé Pierre, l’association s’est étendue et structurée dans le monde au fil des années. Aujourd’hui, 400 communautés réparties sur 4 continents existent. Chacune d’elle a structuré son activité en fonction des besoins de la société civile locale : recyclage, upcycling, coopératives agricoles, artisanat, formation, microcrédit.
  
  À Caneças, en périphérie de Lisbonne, la communauté créée dans les années 80 accueille entre 15 et 20 compagnons permanents. Logé, nourri et blanchi, chaque compagnon devient acteur de solidarité à travers des activités de ramassage, recyclage et restauration.
  
  Les activités de la communauté se structurent autour de la réparation, restauration et vente de divers articles donnés. La communauté se veut indépendante d’un point de vue alimentaire : les tâches quotidiennes incluent aussi l’entretien du potager et les soins aux animaux.

  Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

  We propose to experiment life in a community, out of what is common in our society. Workawayer will live with us, and be fully part of our daily life. We are willing to exchange life experiences and help people grow, as well as growing ourselves and our organization with the volunteers we welcome.

  Nous proposons une vie en communauté, hors de ce qui est normé dans notre société. Le volontaire prendra pleinement part à notre quotidien. Nous souhaitons partager les expériences de vie des uns et des autres, avons à coeur de faire grandir les personnes que nous accueillons. Nous voulons faire grandir notre organisation et notre communauté grâce aux échanges avec les volontaires accueillis.

  Depending on their affinities and the needs of the community at the time of their visit, volunteers will be asked to take part in day-to-day activities, as well as in the association's development activities: communication, marketing, organisation of events, etc.

  Les volontaires seront amenés, en fonction de leurs affinités et des besoins de la communauté au moment de leur venue, à participer aux activités quotidiennes, mais aussi aux activités de développement de l’association : communication, marketing, organisation d’événements..

  [ENG] We speak Portuguese in the community in Caneças, but companions can speak also a bit of French, English or Spanish. We, as responsible of the association, speak Portuguese, French, English and Spanish. [FR] A la communauté de Caneças, les compagnons parlent majoritairement portugais, et certains d'entre eux ont des notions de français ou anglais. Les responsables de la communauté parlent portugais, anglais, français et espagnol.

  We propose an accomodation, which is a double room with private bathroom, and 3 meals a day.

  Nous proposons un logement à la communauté de Caneças (une chambre partagée avec salle de bain privée, et trois repas par jour).
