Built in 1853, the house was built for a Captain - an oysterman - and his wife. It is located on the North Shore Waterfront of Staten Island, NY.
Living at here is by no means the ‘usual’ NYC living situation... but rather an extraordinary experience that brings expansion and inspiration every day. It is a true sanctuary in the midst of the hustling city.
We are an eclectic community of artists living in the home, restoring and maintaining its magnificence. From a Sculptor/Architect, to an Actress/Photographer, to a Sound engineer - we all bring a different flavour of creativity to the home all sharing the same interest in preserving history and creating art to enhance and support it.
In additional to our human community, we have a wonderful collection of Chickens that produce fresh eggs everyday, a magical bunny called Phineas and our dog Brutus.
The house holds four stories and a roof-level cupola. A few features are:
- 40 x 20 ft Saltwater Pool
- Garden with organic vegetables
- Commercial appliance kitchen
- An indoor wood fired pizza oven
- A fully equipped bar room with an ice machine and a soda gun
- Spa room
- An abundance of architectural salvage, antiques and furniture
- High Ceilings
- An office
- Rooftop Cupola - great meditation space
- Washer and Dryer
The projects we do at the home is non profit related, and purely to restore and maintain such a destination that we call our home. Occasionally the home is used for photoshoots as the house draws a lot of attraction due to its uniqueness. If these shoots take place, you will have the opportunity to work- whether it's hosting or helping out on the day, your work will be paid above minimum wage at a rate of $20 per hour.

Being involved with one of New York City's Landmarked destinations brings with it a truly unique experience. This is a rare destination that holds an abundance of learning opportunities.
With working on renovation, there are a ton of techniques you will be guided through by the artists living at the house.
Day to day tasks will bring a wealth knowledge of what it’s like to work with a home of historical value - the traits of detail, care and love in your work will last a lifetime.
Taking care of the birds, the garden and all the plants will offer a sustainable education.
We hope above all, you will experience the personal growth that you gain from being a part of a working, loving community.
NYC has so much to offer as the cultural capital of the world - the city is your playground and we hope to be your base, like family, to support you in the ways you support us.

These are the general tasks....In terms of the person we are looking for - we are after a person with a positive attitude and can-do spirit. Working with the home is a labor of love and one which requires careful attention to detail, organization and intention with what you are helping on.
Experience in these fields is not required. Instead, we are looking for someone with a great work ethic and ability to pick up things quickly.
