Hi we are Kristin (from Iceland) and Adrian (from UK) we came to Otres Village, Cambodia after many years living in New York City, and we fell in love with the people and place. Recently there has been a huge influx of Chinese development that has displaced our ex-pat and local community and forced closure of many businesses but we are hanging in there!
UPDATE JAN 2020
After having our home and business demolished as part of a land grab, we have relocated to the beach and are taking over a beach-front resort together with another local business and starting up our bakery again.
We need plenty of help to reconstruct and build up our business! Our dorm beds now have sea view, and breakfast can be taken on sun loungers ocean-side!
We will post new pics soon - a lot of Chinese businesses have already left the area as online gambling was declared illegal in Cambodia at the end of 2019 and our area was a hotbed of such activity.
UPDATE DEC 2019 We have had massive changes here in the last 6 months even, lots of destruction and displacement due to China investment in the area. The recent volunteers have enjoyed their time here but I ask everyone to review the recent news about this place before applying.
We opened a Bakery project right here in the village, minutes walk away from Otres Beach. In our three years of operation we are happy to have created jobs for 6 Cambodian people.
Our main business is our packaged soft baked cookies that are sold around Cambodia, these are made each morning during the high season by our Cambodian staff. Our Cambodia kitchen crew; Srey Roat, Srey Mach, Srey Yura and YeYe - they come in early in the morning before most of us wake up and are done baking by our breakfast time. Work-a-way volunteers will not be baking these cookies as they are made by our Cambodian staff. The kitchen is full of packaged cookies and our Cambodian manager Mr Sambat arrives and starts to ship out the cookies to our distribution staff, including Cambodian Mr Pach in Siem Reap.
We also have a Cooking / Baking recipe ideas exchange, where if volunteers have particular dishes or items that they want to demonstrate to the others then they are welcome to do so. Perhaps these will be popular items in the future and we would then teach the Cambodian staff how to make!
We also encourage group meals where chefs and food lovers share recipes from their diverse cultures.
We encourage our volunteers to be a self-managing collective, where the work schedule, days off, and responsibilities can be decided by the group.
If volunteers have cooking / baking skills we are happy to have them join our team and add to our menu! If you want to learn baking skills we will let you practice after the kitchen is finished for the day.
However please be prepared to undertake general maintenance and cleaning tasks. Construction, plumbing, electrician experience always a plus!
We can provide you and teach you to ride a manual motorbike.
Leftover unsold baked items we ask our volunteers to distribute among the local families in the Village, or to our local school, an NGO that we work with. We try to have each volunteer visit the school at least once during their stay.
Southern Cambodia is undergoing transition at the moment and our village is seeing increased construction these days however once we are sitting at the beach or boating to a nearby island, life is still wonderful.
Otres is 25 minutes from Sihanoukville, a city experiencing major changes due to the influx of Chinese development.
Our distance from town helps to keep Otres less developed however there are large hotels now being built.
Please note well: Cambodia is a tropical & developing country with mosquitoes, power cuts, water cuts, and dust - if these factors will be a problem for you please do not apply.
