We were very lucky to have arrived to see this land during a few days of fine weather. It is extraordinarily beautiful, with wonderful natural resources. The rest of our stay was accompanied by hard rain – as experienced across the entire Iberian peninsular at the time. This was frustrating as we had found somewhere rich in potential and with a
… read more great vision - but much of the work was on hold due to the weather. Francisco is incredibly knowledgeable about sustainable development of the land. He described a large number of future projects we would love to have been involved in. Given his energy, enthusiasm and determination, I’m sure he will see many of them through before too long. Lucy is kind, welcoming and supportive. Her lunches never failed to raise morale and restore the spirit. She is also a very talented leather worker and we were thrilled with a pouch which we commissioned her to make. We met other inspiring people who were starting to buy up the surrounding farms. It certainly felt like something significant, enduring and beautiful had started here, and we felt lucky to have been involved in some small way.You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

I stayed 2 weeks in this beautiful project and had a very good time. Lucy and Francisco are amazing and caring hosts and personalities. What I especially liked about this project was that I got to really be immersed in the local Portuguese community and life. There are lots of people in the area who are not directly involved in the project but
… read more come around sometimes and give the place a nice touch. Very very diverse friendly warm hearted people. The work that I did was interesting for me. I had a love-hate relationship with the task of clearing out the bramble bushes but I mostly liked doing it, the same with the clearing the old paint from the old doors. I appreciate the support and encouragement I received while doing these jobs. I am still thinking about it and wish I could do it just a bit more so I could feel more proud of the result. Anyway. Thank you to all of you for being so great and I really recommend this project to all volunteers. If you go in the winter months be prepared with warm clothes and a good sleeping bag, because around Monchique it is quite cold in that time. Thank you also for the very nice food! :) Ps. We stayed almost three weeks at this beautiful place. We enjoyed the landscape, the diverse and autonomous work, the food and the wonderful people! Lucy and Francisco were fantastic hosts, who were always keen to make ourselfs feel comfortable (and we did!). It was such a good balance between working, learning, free time and spending time
