TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT: For people wanting to learn/practice Spanish, be aware that we don't speak Spanish at home. English and French are our usual day-to-day preferred languages.
We are Ditte and Sebastien. We are living on the Spanish Mediterranean coast since November 2016 with our two lively and wonderful daughters.
Our house sits on 1 hectare of land about 10 km away from the big sea resort Benidorm but enjoys a lot of tranquility and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. It is easily accessible from Alicante airport. The area has got some great hiking and rock climbing routes.
The land is terraced and is a former lemon plantation which hasn't been much cared for in the past 10 years. The long-term plan is to make it a diversified farm/food forest by applying Permaculture principles in order to be as self-sustainable as possible. For the moment, we are basically learning the land, trying things and enjoying the countryside life! We are also trying to reduce our environmental impact and energy consumption.
The house is rustique but spacious and has all the modern facilities (minus the TV!). It is also a work in progress and we have a lot of projects to improve it.

We are a French Danish couple. We speak English, Danish, French, Spanish and the local Valencian dialect but mostly French and English at home. I (Sebastien) did a permaculture design course in Portugal in 2016 that has been instrumental in that life change from urban to rural life we are currently undertaking. Even though I am pretty new at all this, i hope I can teach you a few things but I am hoping to get some good ideas from you. It's your chance to leave your mark on this piece of land!
This part of the Valencian community is called the Marina Baixa. It is very touristic but combines some beautiful mountains areas, scenic rural villages, great beaches and easy accessibility from Alicante airport.
We are looking for driven and creative people to come and help us.
Someone with practical grafting knowledge or brick laying skills would be great.
We could also use some help with:
- designing water capture systems, ponds, etc...
- prune trees
- pick fruits
- working on the insulation of the house
- sowing seeds and plant trees
- maintaining the compost piles
- adding some art to this place (if you're of the creative type!)
- cooking (if you are so inclined)
And from our ever growing future projects list:
- fruit dryer
- compost toilet
- masonry planters
- bird/bat houses

Workawayers will have their own room and will otherwise share the rest of the house. Meals will be taken with us. We are trying to eat vegetarian as much as possible but we do eat some meat and fish sometimes.
In exchange for food and accommodation, we would expect the workawayers to help in the house/garden 4-5 hours a day, 5 days a week preferably mornings while the kids are at school.
We'll expect the workaways to help in the kitchen, participate in the maintenance of the house and keep their room reasonably clean and tidy.
The nearest village is 2km away and we can lend bikes. Climbing/ hiking routes are available from the house or close-by. To go further (beach, city), there is some public transport from the village and we also drive there regularly.
Otherwise, the place is ideal for sitting out in the sun or in the shade of a fig tree to read!
We would strongly prefer nonsmoking workawayers.
