Description
We live on a wooded hobby farm on the beautiful St Joseph Island in Northern Ontario. We make maple syrup in the spring, grow a garden and raise animals in the summer and fall and have many trails to upkeep in the winter. With four young children, our lives are full and busy but we love to enjoy the natural beauty and musical culture in our community. There are monthly trad dances and often weekly music sharing sessions that we are involved with. We have a cabin and an off grid yurt that we are working towards cleaning up. St Joseph Island is a beautiful place to explore with lots of swimming in the summer and access to many outdoor winter sports later in the year. The projects that we would like help with include some cleaning, woodcutting, garden care and other small projects. You could stay in either the yurt or the cabin. Both are well outfitted but neither have running water.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We love the flora and fauna of our natural environment and have lots of tips for hiking and camping excursions. We also have some camping equipment that you could borrow on your days off. We are involved in the local trad music scene which is welcoming and interesting. Our kids are very curious and interested in other cultures and we would love to learn new things from you!

Help
Our outdoor work revolves around the seasons. We are developing a small orchard, caring for a garden and animals and would like to do some forest clean up. We make maple syrup. The yurt needs some work and we want to build an outdoor shower. We have lots of little dreams and are open to working with different skill sets. If you want to speak another language to our intensely curious children we would love that (especially French!).

Accommodation
We offer a charming little one room log cabin with electricity and a dry sink. There is a small fridge, a very comfy queen bed and small woodstove. There is an outhouse down a short wooded path. You can shower in the house which is a very short walk down a footpath. The cabin is cool in the summer and cozy in the winter and close to the house but private because of the forest that surrounds it. We enjoy a healthy diet, with meat we have raised on our land. We can provide lunch and breakfast food in the cabin and you are welcome to join for a family dinner.

What else ...
A few thoughts of note:
1) We love the idea of cultural exchange for our kids but are cautious about them spending time alone with new adults
2) Lake Superior is a couple of house drive away and is definitely worth a trip
3) This is a great place for biking and exploring nature as well as a quiet retreat for writers or artists -
