Description
Kia Ora, Gidday, Hola, Bonjour,
We are situated halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka. A regional Bus from Queenstown passes by, and we can pick you up from the main road, but there is no other sort of public transport for going in and out of town.
We have been self-building our forever home for twelve years now. There is still much to be done but most excitingly we shifted in just before winter this year!
We have two friendly fur baby-Cats and a dog . We have seven human babies (all grown up and left home) and 4 Grandchildren. -
Types of help and learning opportunities
Light gardening
Creative DIY projects
Help around the house
Light maintenance
-
Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
I was going to say we are just your average DIY self employed Kiwis but, actually, we are not. We do a lot of things "outside the square" e.g. building our own steam bending-timber machine.

Help
I really need help tidying and cleaning! Building over so long is messy business!

Accommodation
In summer -Old Bus - double bed , kitchenette , lounge with log fire and bottle wall . Set away from the house and private.
You would use the house shower and toilet.
Winter - a studio room off the garage next to the house . -
What else ...
We work from 8am - 5-6pm . For your 4 hours you can choose what time you start . In your time off there is 25 acres here to walk and explore and Department of Conservation land nearby also for walking. 30 minutes walk away is a rock area for climbing.

My animals / pets
Sir WilburForce Ross Hodges
Wilbur is our youngest , born Feb this year (2026) he has earned the name wilful Wilbur for his responsiveness (not) to puppy training.
Morty has him well under control and regularly’bitch-slaps’ the little dude into submission. Lady is slowly learning how to ‘drive dog’ but is a wee bit scared .Lady Clawrissa
Lady Clawrissa, bought (sex trafficked ?!) in as consort to the Crown Prince . Sadly however , he rejected her advances , she’s barely even made the friend zone in his eyes . Tolerated would be the more apt description. That’s said she is a cheeky lil black-ninja - darting and dancing about the place

We not only enjoyed the company of mike and cathy and the other workawayers louise and valentine who were amazing, but also the work itself. You learn a lot about different ways to build a house and the effort they put in it. They have so much plans which is truely inspiring. Wish we stayed longer, one … read more
We learnt a lot about building. Despite the fact that we don't know a lot, they were very patient to explain us how to do.
