Description
Our Home on the Dump!
We are a non-profit organisation that has been working on the largest landfill in SE Asia for the last 12 years. Located in Jakarta, Indonesia and home to around 3,000 families, it is about 108 hectares in size and encompasses four small villages. Most of the residents work in the informal waste picker sector and earn between two and five dollars a day. From our onsite HQ on the landfill we have been teaching English to the children on the landfill every Sunday and holding events every month. We have established an excellent rapport with the community and expanded our HQ to include a roof garden.
At the moment we can only accommodate volunteers from Thursday evening until Monday morning as we need to leave the premises during the week for work. However if people would like to stay for longer they are welcome to stay somewhere else in Jakarta or places nearby and then return the following weekend. Sundays are the main days where the children come around for activities whereas other days are spent building, painting, gardening or whatever else needs doing.
As we are a non-profit organisation and don't receive much additional funding we ask that volunteers contribute 150000 IDR per night to help cover food and maintenance costs.
The project focus on the creation and operation of a hostel and community hub.
The hub includes facilities for a school, workshop, tool shed and computer lab.

Help
We have developed a community hub on South East Asia's biggest landfill to create an opportunity for many people, locals and travelers, to work together at the landfill to give whatever skills they have. It's to show people that there is a community living here, and it allows people a chance to change the mindset of the community here to see that they have more oppurtunities than just staying and working on the landfill. It allows people to see that they can achieve their dreams and surpass any limitations, to show the children and adults that the possibilities are endless.
We want volunteers to contribute whatever they can to improve the lives of everyone here. We have set a facility for the kids and young adults to come and learn and grow with the hope of improving their futures.
Any skill that is positive is welcome here. We love dancing, singing, instruments, gardening, computer whizzes, artists and environmentalists. Whether you want to cook, make us laugh or teach the kids whatever you can, you are welcome at our home.
