We are registered as a local NGO, accredited by the Cambodian Ministry of Interior since July 2, 2009.
We provide free-of-charge English classes to the Chiro village children to give them the chance to go on to higher education (university or hospitality school) and to improve their employment prospects.
Most of the children who attend the school come from farmer families with an income of less than 25 dollars a month. This is less than a dollar a day for the whole family.
Giving a child the gift of being able to speak English will enable them to get a well-paid job in the rising Cambodian tourist industry and feed a family of up to ten people. It will also stop most children from finding illegal work in Thailand or working cheap manual labour from an early age.
The aim of the school is to contribute to the country’s development at a community level, to reduce poverty in Cambodia, and to assist in building the nation’s skills base.
- English, Maths, Khmer and traditional Khmer music & dance courses based on a daily program in addition to the state school.
- Over 413 students aged between 6 and 25 year old.
- 5 Local English teachers. One full-time, several part-time teachers as well as foreign volunteers. An important aim of ours is to involve people from the community by employing local, dedicated and motivated people who want to share their English knowledge. The best teenager students have the chance to become paid teachers for the school.
- Becoming state school to offer quality education to the children on a full time program.
- Handicraft items: we are looking for anyone who knows how to make and create small handicraft items to teach the children and women of the village. As farming has stopped, most women has little to do during the day and resort to gambling. We want to keep them occupied!

Volunteering in Chiro village is more than a teaching experience but a really rural Cambodian lifestyle experience. You are welcome to stay with us in a family house and share our every day life.
We always need volunteers to come teach English to the children and help the local teachers improve their English. You will be teaching 2 or 3 English classes a day, with the assistance of a local teacher.
If you would not like to teach English, but would still like to come help, we always need people to help expand and develop our school and organization. If you have any skills which you think might be beneficial for the children, the village or the project you are welcome to contribute. This may include building works, assisting in the schools organic farm, tobacco/corn harvest, cooking in the house or fundraising and promotion of the school on social media websites.
We ask that all volunteers stay for a minimum of three weeks, as any less proves difficult to form a connection and have any great impact at the school. Of course longer term volunteers are able to make long lasting change and are greatly valued.
You will stay in a traditional village house with a local family, close to the school. The family will be able to speak basic English and are always happy to meet new volunteers from all over the word. They will provide you with two home cooked meals a day, lunch and dinner. Breakfast can be bought at a small local restaurant for less than 50 cents.
You will have your own bed, mosquito net, pillow and blanket. The house has a western style toilet and cold-water shower.
We have electricity 24/7 and internet access in the school area.
The cost of coming to stay with us in Chiro village is 6 USD per day. 5 USD will go to your host family to pay for accommodation, two meals per day, electricity, etc. The additional 1 USD is a small donation for the organisation, and whilst it is not compulsory for you to pay this it will go a long way towards helping the school and would be greatly appreciated.
We have a Khmer traditional music and dance training program in our school. Come enjoy the shows and maybe learn a new instrument or dance!
You will be free on weekends so you can enjoy the village life. You can go to the fields or to Mekong beach to relax or swim with the kids. Or maybe you can go fishing, take an ox kart ride or play football with the children. Kampong Cham is just 5 km away from the village - an easy ride by bike, tuk-tuk or motorbike.
Thank you and we hope to see you soon!

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
