Description
Our farm is seven acres of woodlands and gardens on a little island in the Salish Sea, a ferry ride away from Seattle. Vashon (named by colonial settlers) is the traditional, unceded land of the sx̌ʷəbabs (“Swift Water People”) known today as part of the Puyallup Tribe. We are dedicated to a culture of gratitude for the abundance we enjoy, including homegrown fruit, vegetables, meat, goat milk, yogurt, cheese, and fresh eggs from free-running hens. Most of what we sustain ourselves with is what we have tended with our hearts and hands alongside our friendly pup Pippin.
We are home to a place-based elementary school in its 17th year. The school is rooted in emotional literacy, ecological awareness, and social justice. Living and learning in a community here means eating kale all winter, preserving a lot of fruits and vegetables, pulling out invasives and planting native plants, milking goats, fires on the beach, listening to the owls in our woods at night, spying on frogs in the pond, passionately recycling, salvaging and composting, keeping warm by the woodstove, rising with the sun and the chickens, lots of laughing and breaking bread together.Types of help and learning opportunities

Workawayers stay in a 25' diameter yurt with a comfy air mattress, electricity, sink, cookstove, and woodstove or a studio loft above the barn with kitchenette and electric heat . Composting toilet and fridge located nearby. Hot shower and laundry are available in the farmhouse.
We will provide the basics in terms of food and encourage eating as much from the land as possible. Meals are sometimes joyfully shared when schedules permit. What else ...
We are surrounded by water and sometimes orcas circumnavigate Vashon Island. The beaches are full of the wonders of nearshore ecology. Birders and cyclists abound. We have kayaks and bicycles available for use. The island has many amazing trails for hiking and a small town with cafes serving up fair trade coffee and plenty of live music. You must walk or drive onto one of the three ferries to get to the island.
