Couple living on 34 acres of forest and pasture on a mountainside overlooking Slocan Lake in southern British Columbia. Inhabitants also include chickens, ducks, a large farm dog, horse and donkeys and assortment of intruding wildlife such as bears, cougars, bobcats and deer. We're presently expanding pasture and overhauling secondary buildings from foundation to roof just as we've been doing for the past twenty years with no end in sight. Definitely not a new-agey or politically-correct homestead but the village a couple of miles away is cluttered with old hippies and people who want to improve us. We just like to keep it straight ahead, down to earth and easily enjoyable which the natural surroundings permit us to do.
I work from home as a wildlife biologist and my husband does everything else with my expert advice and his limited talents and fluctuating levels of success. We don't run a commercial farm anymore because we did not want to die poor, bitter and tired, just tired.

If you're willing to do a minimum of manual labour in a beautiful mountain setting with easy access to a huge lake and a couple of friendly villages in British Columbia, the cultural exchange will be up to you, as will anything you care to learn.
Would appreciate help most especially with construction (renovating a small house, nothing Gothic), preparing new pasture and everything I don't want to remind myself has to be done this year. Also, if you know how to ride a horse, you could keep mine busy when I'm too busy. There's always something to do, most of which doesn't require a Nobel Prize. Construction skills would be an asset.

We don't care if you smoke, eat raw chicken or listen to Ornette Coleman (only with headphones, of course) as long as you don't howl when you pray and do not require breakfast in bed or a daily pedicure.
Silverton is a small community located on Slocan Lake. We are less than 1 hour from Nelson, the well-known heritage town. Nakusp and Ainsworth (approx 45 minutes drive from here) have hotsprings. Slocan Lake has fantastic beaches to camp, and the area is surrounded by national parks and hiking trails.
