Description
Great Mackerel Beach is a magical place in Sydney. A small and peaceful community with lots of wildlife; expect to see wallabies and plenty of local birds. If you have seen the television series 'Home and Away' then you will recognise 'Summer Bay' across the water. A safe beach is only metres from the door. The view from the house is stunning as we look across to Barrenjoey Lighthouse and Palm Beach. We would prefer two mature helpers or a couple over 30 that can stay for at least a week, but preferably longer, to help with weeding, establishing a veggie and flower garden, internal and external house cleaning and general maintenance. We also get involved in volunteer coastal dune preservation and have put in more than 400 native plants and 200 sandbags along our beach front to help protect it from storm damage. Someone with experience working with stone or landscaping would be fabulous. You can enjoy time off exploring nature and the beach. We can offer swimming, fishing, bushwalking, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP). In exchange we ask for your work the equivalent of 5 hours/day 5 days a week at agreed times.
There is a newly-renovated self-contained 2 bedroom apartment (sometimes used for holiday rentals) with a brand new kitchen and bathroom for our Workawayers to have their own space and privacy. We are happy to share evening meals and cooking. We will provide all food - just let us know your preferences in advance as there are no shops. There are no cars at Mackerel and the only nightlife is star gazing and nature. Generally we find our location is best suited to couples looking for privacy, peace and quiet.
Our small, friendly community has only 30 full time residents with more visiting on the weekends. It is surrounded by Kuringai Chase National Park. Mackerel has mobile coverage and we have internet. We use rainwater. Public transport access is good with buses from Sydney City or Manly to the wharf at Palm Beach and an hourly ferry service during the day. We are located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, approx 50km north of the Harbour Bridge.
