  • Description

Hi! We are Becky and Mahe living on one the most beautiful islands in the world, Ha'apai, Tonga. We are free spirited and fun loving and need help educating and caring for our 3 little monkeys Bella 8, Leila 6 and Lili 5. We are a Tongan/ British family and looking for a teacher to follow a western curriculum (probably from the UK). We love people of all nationalities provided you are a qualified teacher and happy to embrace the local culture which is very simple and rustic. We are trying to improve the girls skills in reading, writing, maths and science so they can fit into a western school easily should we ever leave Tonga. Currently they enjoy the local school 3 days a week but only get taught in Tongan. We may change this and are considering taking our 8 year old out of school as she is struggling with the language. (Our 2 younger daughters speak much better Tongan as they were babies when we moved here). We are very open to suggestions and think the position would be better suited to a couple as it is a remote place to live and we are looking for a long term commitment (at least 6 months). We would be open to one of the couple being a carpenter or at least having some building/ construction skills if you are not both teachers as we will have some building work coming up over the next months.

You will learn what life is like on a tropical island. Enjoy interacting with with the girls and become a part of our family. You will learn about the Tongan Polynesian culture. You will live next door to one of the worlds most beautiful sandy beach's. If interested you can help grow vegetables and farm pigs. You can learn to snorkel, fish, cook Tongan food, speak the language, kayak, paddle board, dive, and share this magnificent place that we live with all it has to offer. If you're here during the peak season you will have the opportunity to swim with humpback whales which can be seen from the beaches all around the island!

  • Help

We are primarily looking for a qualified teacher to help educate our children following a syllabus probably from the UK (mainly English, maths and science). Aside from the basic academic teaching we want our children to be educated spiritually and this could include something like swimming, meditation, a martial art, yoga, or anything that would enhance their well being. We are very open minded with this but we believe that spiritual development is important. Our oldest daughter is 8 we also have a 6 and 5 year old.
We can provide accommodation and meals and will share cooking and washing up duties. (There will be the opportunity to earn money too).
We would also be interested in someone who speaks Tongan although this is not at all necessary or expected.
As it is a remote island we feel that this position may be suited to a couple (we could find different work for the partner such as building/ construction, cleaning, maintenance or gardening etc.)
If you love working with children then we hope to hear from you; it is a fantastic opportunity for the right person/ people.

    What else ...

Time off can be spent walking around the island, swimming in tropical blue waters, snorkelling, reading a book, meeting the locals, going to a bar, going to church, drinking Kava, diving, paddle boarding, kayaking, exploring neighbouring islands, etc.
From July- October you get humpback whales which come to the warmer waters of Tonga to breed and give birth. It is one of the few places in the world where you can actually swim with these majestic animals and it is an absolute privilege to do this. My husband and I are a skipper and a guide for this activity so we would hope to be able to take you out!
Unfortunately due to the remoteness of the location it is difficult to get a variety of food here so we prefer people who don't have special dietary requirements.
