    About Us
Hola amigos! We're a Latino-Canadian family excited to share our home and culture with you. My mom, who will be your host, is a retiree from Guatemala with many stories to share. She lives in a house that's a little too big for one person, so she's looking to share it with Workawayers from around the world.

    Why You'll Love It Here
Edmonton is full of festivals and friendly people. Our home is in an older neighbourhood with big trees and easy access to downtown. Malls, coffee shops, and restaurants are minutes away. There's lots of trails for walking and Elk National Park and Jasper National Park can be reached in a few hours.

    Family & Visitors
You'll meet my mom's three charming grandkids, and I (her son) drop by as often as possible. I've lived in Europe and Latin America, and speak four languages, so we'll have lots of travel stories to share with each other.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

My mom has lived a movie-worthy life, so ask her about her adventures and everything she's overcome. She can teach you to cook Guatemalan dishes like pepián and chile relleno, or common Spanish phrases.

Our family is loud and cheerful. You can join us on trips to the park or simply for dinners on the patio outside. Whenever possible, I can take you to local spots like the Farmer's Market or on walks along the River Valley. If you like dancing, we can go Salsa dancing too.

In your free time, you can explore all that Edmonton has to offer. Festivals, art galleries and live music abound year-round.

We're excited to exchange cuisine, customs and languages with our guests.

  • Help

    Help

Helping around the house and garden are the primary responsibilities. Depending on the season, you could help with:

House Care - Cleaning bathrooms, floors, and making small repairs.

Cooking - Preparing shared meals with my mom and our family when we visit. Learn about Guatemalan cuisine and share your own recipes, too.

Gardening and Outdoor Work - Watering plants, weeding, raking leaves, etc. In winter, some snow shovelling and keeping walkways safe.

My mom will gladly work alongside you, so you can always ask questions if something is unclear. She speaks English and Spanish, and a little bit of French too. And if that fails, you can always communicate with your hands and feet.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You'll have an entire loft to yourself on the third floor. There are big windows, a table and chair for working on your computer, a clothes hanger and drawers for storage. Oh, and a queen-size bed to sleep.

For breakfast, you can help yourself to what's in the pantry. Cereal, fruit and other basics are always available. During the week, you can help my mom prepare home-cooked meals. You can cook for yourself on weekends, and if my mom's home, you can cook together. She's usually out with her grandkids on the weekends, so you'll have plenty of freedom.

    Getting Around
A city bus stop is a few minutes away, so you'll be able to get around quite easily. There are also buses to Jasper National Park if you want to explore the mountains.

    House Rhythm
My mom is retired, so she sleeps in most days. Helping around the house would begin around 10-11 am, and will never be for more than 4 hours a day. She attends church weekly, so you can join her if you'd like to meet other locals. Please ask before inviting anyone into the home, as her safety and comfort are my priority.

    Community Vibe
There may be other guests in the home at the same time, so you'll have opportunities to chat with new people and share stories over morning coffee.
