  • Description

We are a hostel/co=living space in Medellin! We have 18 rooms with a capacity of about 30 people. We usually have about 20 guests, but sometimes more. What we expect from volunteers is shown below in English first, then Spanish.

We need volunteers for our common area kitchen and social areas and for the other common areas of the hostel. You will need to wash dishes, keep the kitchen clean, keep the common areas clean, etc., so basically cleaning, but in the social areas of the hostel, so plenty of travelers to interact with while you work. You will also try to maintain a good atmosphere on the roof, playing good music, helping people meet each other, etc.

We have 1 shift available. 7 or 8am until 9 or 10Am (2 hours every morning) plus 10am-12pm and 10pm- midnight on sundays. so monday's thru saturday you are free after 10am all day. Sundays you are free from noon until 10pm.
We are not currently offering breakfast to volunteers. we had to close our restaurant because of the pandemic.

Minimum stay 2 weeks, maximum stay 3 weeks.

No shy people. No lazy people. We need proactive/positive people who are extroverts and high energy. During your shift you are not allowed to do personal stuff like emails, Facebook, etc.

    Volunteer Orientation
Welcome! Thanks for offering to volunteer with us. Here is what it involves:
Be a good example to other guests by following the hostel rules (posted in every room), especially:
    1. Respect quiet hours after 10PM and before 8AM
    2. Keep your area of the your room orderly
    3. Clean up after yourself in the kitchen and other common areas
    4. Do not do personal tasks during your shift (chatting, surfing, etc.). There is a lot of work to do at a hostel, so if you have nothing to do, please write to Joel or Leidy to see what needs to be done.
What you don´t have to do:
Police other guests. We understand it is hard to walk the line between guest and volunteer/staff person. For example, a guest is noisy after quiet hours. If after casually asking them to keep it down, they continue to disrespect hostel rules, simply let Joel or Leidy know by Whatsapp. You do not need to scold or be aggressive with guests. Sometimes it might be necessary, but a staff person will do that.
Tasks / guidelines for during your shift:
    1. Be connected and respond promptly to Whatsapp messages from staff promptly during your shift.
    2. Be on time.
    3. Be presentable…clean clothes, where shoes or flip flops, and good personal hygiene.
    Rooftop chores
    2. Put on some music with appropriate volume for day/time of day.
    3. Use a rag to dust all table tops/clean them with multipurpose spray if necessary
    4. Thoroughly clean and organize kitchen, put all items away.
    5. Clean bathroom.
    6. Sweep and mop as necessary.
    7. Pull out and clean trays under stovetop burners.
    8. Check refrigerators for food gone bad. If you are ABSOLUTELY SURE food is bad, you can throw it out. If any doubt at all. Please save and bring down to the first floor kitchen. We will hold it there in case someone claims it later.
    9. When you are done with all these chores, please sit at the kitchen counter or big glass table and socialize with guests/ introduce yourself to guests/ help guests meet each other, and generally be available for questions. Find out what guests need and if you can help them, great. If not, ask us for help via whatsapp.

    1. Organize bathrooms every hour starting at the end of the first hour of your shift.
    2. Bring rags, toilet paper, cleaning powder, a sponge, and garbage bags (black to collect a lot of garbage, white to replace the bathroom trash bin bags).
    3. Use rags to wipe down the counter top.
    4. Clean the sink with cleaning powder and sponge, and rinse.
    5. Use some toilet paper to remove hairs from shower.
    6. Use a rag to dry/clean bathroom floor. Just move the rag with your foot.
    7. DON´T forget the bathrooms in rooms 14, 15, and 17.
    8. Add toilet paper if necessary.

    Orientación para Voluntarios
¡Bienvenido!
Buena presentación: ropa limpia, usar zapatos o sandalias y tener buena higiene personal.
