Description
Volunteer Cultural Exchange – Room & Board in Envigado, Medellín
Hi!
We are an American-Colombian family living in Envigado, just outside Medellín, and we are looking for a friendly, energetic English speaker—ideally American or British—who would like to stay with us in exchange for spending time with our two young boys in the afternoons and evenings.
Our boys are David, 8, and Jacob, 4. Our main goal is very simple: we would like them to spend more time naturally interacting in English. This isn't meant to feel like formal English classes. We are looking for someone who enjoys being around children and can hang out with them, play games, read, talk, do activities, play outside, help them with little projects, and generally encourage them to use English as part of everyday life.
If you speak another language as well, we'd also be very happy for the boys to get some exposure to it.
The schedule
The hours would normally be 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., six days a week, with Tuesdays completely free—about 24 hours per week.
That leaves you almost the entire day free to explore Medellín, study Spanish, work remotely, go to the gym, take classes, or simply enjoy Colombia.
Where we live
We live in Envigado, near Indiana Mall and several international schools, approximately 25 minutes from Medellín.
Our home is in a green, countryside setting, but we are definitely not isolated. There are supermarkets, stores, cafés and restaurants nearby, and buses to different parts of Medellín and Envigado stop directly in front of our house.
We have a large backyard with plenty of outdoor space, a fire pit and BBQ area. We also have a very friendly dog named Coco, who is almost two years old, so you should be comfortable around dogs.
Your accommodation
You would have your own private apartment on the first floor of our house, with a separate entrance, so you would have your own space and privacy rather than simply staying in a spare bedroom with the family.
Room and board are included as part of the exchange.
We also own and manage a coliving property about 20 minutes away, so you'll have some connection to an international community in Medellín as well.
About us
I'm American and have been living in Medellín since 2008. My wife is Colombian and is from Medellín.
We're not looking for a traditional nanny or someone to clean the house. What we're really looking for is someone who likes kids and would enjoy becoming part of their daily lives for a while—talking, playing, doing activities and helping reinforce their English through normal interaction.
For the right person, we think this could be a great way to experience Medellín with comfortable private accommodation, plenty of free time, and the opportunity to get to know a Colombian-American family.
If this sounds interesting, send us a little information about yourself, where you're from, how long you'll be in Medellín, your experience with children, and what you're hoping to get out of your time in Colombia. -

The place is nice, cool people and there is a free outdoor gym in front of the building. If you work? Enjoy the views from the terrace and the fast Wi-Fi. If you just want to chill out after wour volunteering hours? Staying inside is also nice, but in a 15 … read more
